Hairy Back Shrimp!

My fire shrimp has decided not to hang out in the rocks, but on the back of the tank in the algae. He likes it about two inches under the lights. As a result he is growing algae on his back. He is due to molt any time now. I was wondering if any one else has seen this? Will it molt normal?

Thanks for any ideas
Eric

That's a messed up little shrimp. Never seen that before, only on turbo snails and the like.

I've seen shrimp antennae get brown with algae a day or two before a molt. It's like they stop grooming a few days before they molt.

It will likely die. If the rhizomes penetrated the exoskeleton it won't be able to molt properly. At least thats what I've read. Bad algae infections have killed some nice L. maculata mantis shrimp. I don't know if it will apply to fire shrimp, but I would immagine....

You should keep it in case he goes bald and needs a hair piece.
