Thanks Joey, those were my thoughts as well. I doubt anyone works in a foundry or in a coal mine because it is enjoyable. People do what is necessary to provide for their families.

Bagger, cashier, produce clerk, produce assistant manager, office manager - almost 5years on the job during HS and first part of college
Survey Technicial/Drafter, then Survey Manager - 4 years Local Government Engineering Designer/ Survey Manager - 2 years Surveying and Engineering Buisness Owner - 2 years Local Government Enginneering Designer/ Sotrmwater Manager - 4 months - current 7 years in my career path (Civil Engineering/ Surveying) and I still love my job, otherwise I woudl do something else. Doesn't mean I always want to talk about my job and don't want to take some time off.

Paperboy Baby sitter Bagboy - Food store, then stockboy Landscaper Dishwasher Worked in (2) different Industrial shops - Heat treating Metal Asst Mgr convienent store, then Mgr Kentucky Fried chicken employee Bartender, ID checker Asst Mgr Retail store, then Mgr Computer work: different companies/jobs Build & sell 286 & 385 PC's - mostly Unix Build & sell 286 & 386 - mostly DOS, then Windows based Contractor - Tech Project Lead - Harvard Pilgrim Novell Admin, all IT support, UNix, E-mail etc TBofNE Novell Admin, all IT support, UNix, E-mail etc OH+R Contract work for a year Makin' copies (Yes serious), PC & printer support at a Law firm Help Desk, Desktop Support - whipping boy - Perot Idiots Inc Daddy Day Care Wife's whippin' boy - and loving it  I used to take PT jobs in the winter to put $$ away for a vacation, TV, whatever. If I liked the job I might stay a while, but once summer came it was bye bye. I also didn't work weekends Sometimes new managers didn't understand this  I would be quite up front with them about why I had the job Most were OK, only one said I had to work weekends...bye bye Many would contact me in advance to see if I woudl be available that winter. For some reason I liked to work when I was younger, I still do. But I've run into some real Mgmnt idiots in the past 10 years, Maybe its just the IT field or I have lousy luck. Clue on 1st job should have been when they fired my boss after 2 months Clue on 2nd job should have been the flat top haircut idiot who still thought he was in the military & could cuss people out. I have worked for the same firm (although 3 different names) since January, 1983. I graduated in December, 1982 and started work in January. I wouldn't know what it was like to work somewhere else or how to look for a job. I have every intention of retiring from here.

I try not to count my eager entrepenuer fiascos that I've held throughout my life. I have fairly little "official" jobs.
Dishwasher for local steakhouse --14 years old; 6 months, hated it, and vowed never to work in the fast food/restaurant service again if I can help it. Cart Pusher -> Cashier -> Floor Worker -> Dairy/Frozen/Bread -> Meat Cutter --18 years old; Took about a year to get to meat cutter and stayed a meat cutter through three years and two stores. Custom Graphics Specialist --21 years old; Will be here 4 years in July. Though I can get frustrated and flustered, I doubt I would want to change my career. Now, if they could only get me closer to home and some part time help, I would have no quarrel retiring with my company. As far as unofficial jobs, here's a tiny list; Lawnmower, Babysitter, Trading Card Broker, Artist, Aquaculture, Local Fish Store help, Tank Setup and Maintenance. **Some I made good money in, some I lost money in, some I did for free and should have charged, etc. Predominately stopped most of these because of lack of time.

Babysitter Wendy's (started cleaning tables, ended as assistant manager Burger King - team leader Krystals Manager (1 week, couldn't stand the smell) Tile Installer Famous Footwear - stock & sales Dominos Manager Trucking Dispatcher Frieght Supervisor Domestic Freight Forwarder International Shipping & Banking DM for Canadian Company in Air & Ocean frieght Mom (took time to raise the boy) Fence Installer Project Manager in Construction Currently hubby & I have a small fence business, I work for a doctor and just recently started doing inventory work.

I've been working off and on since I was around 12, I guess.
lawnboy paperboy Hardee's cook...high school baker...after taking a break from college pizza chef/waiter...same deli slave...same copier tech...started about the time I started taking classes again copy shop/customer service...college job for 4.5 years research assistant in alzheimer's...first job after college...4 years research assistant in mental health/substance abuse...3.5 years domino's delivery "expert"...past 2 months to make extra cash, while I lost 50% of my grant funding...interviewing for a new position at the med school tomorrow...more substance abuse research...wish me luck! |

- Department store (layaway gofer> "cart boy"> cashier> sporting goods clerk) - I think I started here at $2.20/hr as a junior in HS
- labor in a clay plant (made ceramic sewer pipe) - hard, dirty work but I was making over $3.50/hr! which was a lot to me but I felt sorry for the young guys there trying to raise a family on that kind of wages. Did this a couple summers. - labor for a home builder (cut weeds, rough carpentry, drywall, roofing, blah, blah, blah) A summer job and over the next Christmas break. - [college jobs]: chapel maintenance > art department assistant > fort steward(I ran the kitchen in our fraternity house) *Now I work for my wife. Hardest job I ever had!

College years: Final test in semiconductor plant (twice), seasonal wildland firefighter (seven summers), shoe salesman (twice), janitor, nursery worker (twice). After college: Seasonal wildland firefighter (three summers), tree nursery worker (three winters), wildland fire guy (permanent since 1987).
