180 Design

I am thinking about ordering a 180 acrylic tank and was wondering if I could get some opinions on the design. Currently it will be used as a room divider between the kitchen and living room. The dilemma I have is I don’t want to get the end overflow because of resale and later in life it may go up against wall. My thought is to get duel overflows in the back that are placed all the way to the sides, leaving about 1 to 2 between the side acrylic and the overflow. I would then cover the view of the overflows with wood that will match the stand and canopy façade. This will leave a viewing area from the kitchen of about 3’ or 4’. This will also leave me the option of using it against a wall one day if needed. Does anyone foresee any problems with this design? Thanks

sounds just like the new AGA 180 mega flow layout to me and i dont think you'll have any problems with the design at all.

I just ordered a 180 Gal Starphire tank, that will be used as a divider between the Dining Room, and a Den. I put the overflow on one end, whch will be partially covered
by an Oak cabinet. End cabinet will give me access to the overflow and plbg that will be coming out of the bottom of the overflow. All filtering , etc .,will be in the bsmt. This allows for full viewing on one end and both sides. Have a photo available if you are interested.

Setting up a room dividing tank is a cool opportunity that not many have. I'd say do it right and get the side overflow. I wouldn't comprimise on the view from either side.

Besides, if you set this tank up and then take it down later to set up somewhere else, chances are that you'll want a bigger tank by then anyway. (trust me, I have a 180 and a 125)

I've had two room-divider tanks now...Much smaller though. A 55g and now I'm moving up to a 75g. Both of them have the holes drilled through the bottom close to the center line on either end, one hole is the overflow, one the return. You can pipe inside the tank to a overflow box along which ever side works for you, or just put the box over the hole, and build rock up around it.
