is this tank too big?

Hi

I am thinking of getting a 100 gallon corner tank someone is selling. But I am afraid if my apartment floor wll fall. I live in the third floor (highest floor) of an apartment that is not totally made of cement and brick. I think it is made of wood. I am going to make this tank a reef tank so all together the tank with sump should easily weight around 1500 lbs. Does anyone have this size tank in 2nd or the third floor. Please let me know. I am including a picture of the apartment.

thanks
gaurav

Well, you could always go to home depot and buy 20 of their $3.95 5-gallon buckets, fill them, and see what happens!

Good luck!!!

No problem. I've got a 120 with all the stuff that goes with it sitting on a springy wood floor in my apartment. I've only leaked water on my downstairs neighbors twice so far. Protein skimmer over flowed after a tank cleaning and the Calcium reactor outlet hose fell out of the sump onto the floor. Just be careful of those 2 things happening. Other than that you should be good to go. Make sure you measure your doors and stairwells before you buy.

I have a 120, with a 55g sump on the second floor of my house. My only promblem, ive leaked water downstairs 3 times( cpr refuge overflow, and 2 times i forgot about my ro/di unit and it overflowed my water contianer), and saltwater is very destructive. As a landlord i dont allow saltwater tanks at my properties so check your lease it would be a shame to invest all that money to have to rip it down. Also If you have people under you, they might not be so friendly about saltwater coming down their ceiling. IMHO ive learned this too, having a SW tank on a second/third floor is a bad idea, its even worse if you dont own whats below you!

it'll be just fine, but I'd lay down a piece of plywood to strengthen the floor. Mine wanted to tilt, so you might think about cutting the carpet out. Even if you rent, it's cheap to have someone come fix a small patch when you move.

I had a 135 FW setup in an apartment for years (all through undergrad). Those leak stories are hilarious BTW. I think you guys should submit that for next months top ten forum -Top ten ways you've flooded your house.

pbanda, he's a troll(someone who actually enjoys making remarks like that). Kind of a sicko sort of thing.

I've had my 75(120gallon system total) on the second floor of my apartment for almost 2 years. Funny thing, my apartment building is EXACTLY like yours too. I've also had my share of spills but only a few drops have ever reached the neighbors below. Last month my overflow got plugged and 15+ gallons of water overflowed on the floor while I was at work. Still only a few drops made it through. Renter's insurance would be a good investment.

If this is a corner tank, and you place it in the corner, you'll be fine. You'll almost definitely be near a load bearing wall, plus a 100G is not that big. I had a 140G in a 3rd story apartment with no problems. I did get paranoid though and placed a huge 1/8" thick steel plate under the carpet pad, below the stand, just in case!

Suckerfishdish. Please be aware of the fact that I have been warned by the Board Regulators. I might appear to come off rude, however, I am only harmlessly joking with some of my friends. I apologize for any harm that I have done to you. I will be well more aware of other peoples feelings upon this and other message boards. I was only joking, I would just like you to know. I am a very respectful person.
