Which fish actually "school" in a tank?

Anyone have suggestions for some fish that actually "school" - so many schooling fish seem to spread all around in a tank.

Thanks!

Apogon Leptcanthus -- bluestreak/threadfin/longspine/blue-eyed cardinals.

I've got a new school of 16 right now... they are very poor shippers, so some will die (lost 2 so far in 2 days), but ORA is now captively breeding them, so ask your LFS.

The problem with schooling fish is that the "school" is a defensive habit, in your aquarium fish realize they aren't food for anything else, and they don't have to school. It is only very rare for fish that school really well to continue to have a polorized school in an aquarium. Even in nature if you are patiant enough you will see the school of aquarium type fish break up and begin to chase and feed, but if you make an aggressive move they go streight back into the typical school.

There are many non-aquarium type fish like mullets, silversides, bait fish and the like that will stay in a polorized school because movement outside the tank triggers the flight response. The problem is they aren't very good or colorful tank inhabitants. There is always the possibility you get lucky and they school dispite how comfortable they become

I hear orange lines cardinals are very aggressive towards one another, and given time, will slowly kill each other off until there is only one dominant pair in the tank.

what size tank are we talking about here? our 3 bannerfish stayed together pretty much all the time...but you would need a large system to provide swimming space for bannerfish

Absolutely they will school. I bought 6 for my 55 and I am only left with a mating pair. I am about to order 10-12 more....they make a great shoal.

I wonder if the tank was large enough (200-400g) if it helps with schooling? or if a seperate type of schooling fish were introduced... like g chromis and the cardinals? hmmm
