Should I get out my saw?
Hi gang. I need a little help with my new mycedium (same as the "alien eye " listed in the challice pics). I just received it today after nearly 40 hrs of shipping (courier problems). It is not doing well at all. There are areas where the flesh is completely gone, other areas where the flesh is turning brown and slipping off. Sorry I am not able to post a pic (have to get something to convert the file type). Would it be in my best interest to cut away the dead areas or leave it and hope for the best? One area is doing exceptionally well. It is roughly a 3"x3" patch right in the heart of the coral.
As of now it is under a 1/2 pop bottle to reduce flow in an attempt to keep the flesh from blowing off. Thanks for any help Rick |

IMHO, I would frag it. The tissue sloughing off is not a good sign (possibly Brown Jelly Infection), and it could potentially spread to the remaining healthy portion. The rest of the coral should recover well with good water conditions though. Best of luck!

If it's just the mycedium and not on a rock, you should be able to frag off the pieces of dead material (I actually used a pliers and snapped the dying pieces off). These corals seem to be pretty dang tough. I've got two colonies that came looking rough, and are now looking quite good.

Ok I got it fragged and kept a bigger piece than I thought. I did keep all the pieces I broke off because they still had some tissue on them. All I can do now is keep my fingers crossed.
The dealer that I bought it from has been reimbursed the shipping (credit to my account) and also informed me that if the coral does not make it that he will also give me full credit for it even though his arrive alive doesn't come into effect for another couple weeks. We have also agreed to use another courier. LOL. Thanks for the help Rick |

Be careful about protecting the frag(s) from flow with the bottle as you don't want any necrotic tissue to hang on that could compromise living tissue.

Thanks for the info. The coral frags are in the sump and appear to be doing much better. The bottle was also to keep the peppermint shrimp away. There positions will be reversed when the coral comes around.
Still can't get a pic. Anyone know a good image converter that will allow me to post here. Rick |

Well I've kept an eye on the mycedium all day. Have noticed extensive swelling in the tissue, color is back and the mouths are also very distinct. Grabbed some iodine and added half the recommended dosage for now (LFS had no test kits for it). Some of the other frags are getting along very well also.

Added a link to photobucket. See if this works. The pic is before the coral was shipped to me.

Here are some pics of the coral now. Also a pic of 2 frags that are doing well. 8 frags in total that look very healthy.

Looks like it has the potential to recover nicely. I would keep the frags in an area of decent flow, and hopefully all 8 will do well for you.

Couple links to updated pics. Hermit crab knocked it over this morning, so I decided to take a couple quick ones.
Appears to be doing alot better now. Also the 8 frags are doing great still. Is this coral an "Alien Eye"? http://photobucket.com/albums/v647/g...t=100_6504.jpg http://photobucket.com/albums/v647/g...t=100_6503.jpg Rick |
