Canopy: what to do with ballasts?
I am thinking about taking 2 24 in. PC fixtures, taking out the guts and making a wooden canopy for them. What do folks usually do with the ballasts to keep them away from the moisture?
I am thinking of making a 'floor' for the canopy, the ballasts would be above the floor, while the lamps and reflectors would be attached to the underside. Or do people often attach the ballasts to the back of the canopy? TIA |

If you're going to retro the lights, why not just add more wire while you're at it.This way you could locate the ballasts away from the canopy all together(maybe in the stand)HTH.

I have electronic ballasts and they are mounted to the top of the canopy.
On my old canopy I had the ballasts on the back of it with out any problems. |

45commando is right, Off site those heat generators. Get yourself a cheap toolbox and throw those ballasts in there with a computer powersupply for 12v power and some extra wire. You can always use a little 12v action in your reef system..
I have a 200w VHO, 2 - 175 MH magnetics, & a PC powersupply in a toolbox. I mounted them off the box by using bolts and nuts as spacers so they were not touching anything. I have a 4" fan pulling air through the box keeping it nice and cool. I can't believe how hot some guys ballasts get. |

You can mount them on top, or if you back is painted plant you can mount them on the inside of your stand
