Stupid Sock Accident

My 16 gallon nano tank is in the corner of my room, and is right next to my laundry basket. When I go to bed, I usually just take off my socks and throw them into the hamper.

Last night, however, it was completely dark, and when I took off my socks and threw them toward the laundy basket, one of them happened to stretch completely out and land on the edge of the tank--one end about 4 inches in the water, and the other about 2 inches out of the water.

I woke up the next morning to the horrible sound of a powerhead blowing bubbles (it was halfway out of the water). As it turned out, the sock created a siphon, and emptied about 3 gallons of water onto my carpet, and a pile of Maxim magazines below.

Just a warning to all reefers to watch where you throw your socks.

No, the fish/inverts were fine. I guess dirty cotton doesn't affect water chemistry.

It was a pain to soak all the water up though, and it smelled like shi*t.

I don't know what smelled...maybe a combination of the wet sock and carpet.

If my sock had landed there, it would have created a natural disaster!

Well since you didn't lose any livestock, it is a pretty funny story. Have you moved your laundry basket yet?

I remember back in 4th grade someone did a project where they made a water filter out of socks. Stick one end in muddy water, clean water will drip out the other end... good survival skills!

That raises an interesting question...I wonder if it was salt water that was siphoned out or freshwater. I checked the salinity and it gave me a reading of 1.025 which I matched the replacement water to. That leads me to believe it did indeed siphon salt as well as water.

Great story rtcpenguin. I know how you feel though, I've overflowed my 12 gallon before due to a flow switch I set up wrong. OOOPS.

Heh. The two on top of the stack were ruined, and 1 on the bottom too. The others are just a little wet on the corner...still readable.

Feel free to forward those issues of Maxim, and I'll see what I can do to restore them. If efforts prove fruitless, I'll ....recycle them.
