Sweeeett, Delishus, Yuuuuummmyy MEATYNESS!
this is one of my pet corals because I have had it for many yrs and it is still the same albeit much larger polyp that I started with. I have a pretty big hand and in this pic I was actually encouraging it to contract so that I could move it, I took the pic after a couple minutes of intentionally irritating it. I guess this image is a little smaller than life size

I agree they are all Cynarina. This is by far my favorite coral. I have three of them. An orange, green, and Brown/white. I will post the pics as soon as I am able. I love the orange and red ones. I have a change to buy a huge red one a month back for $70 dollars but my others are so big there just isn't room for more.

Scolymia
Cynarina Pic's from Whelk.aims.gov.au Notice that wild specimens do not inflate like our home specimens. I think a lot of LPS are like that.

I wouldn't use that book as a guide to species names. Veron's Corals of the World or the Australian Institute of Marine Science web site (AIMS) would be better references, in my opinion. J. Sprungs book is great, but as a quick reference guide, not definitive.
C. Deshayesiana may have been a species name at one time, but there is only one species of Cynarina, and that is C. lacrymalis.

I did your google search Jeremy. This article was the second to pop up, by no other than J.Sprung. He talks about Hybrids and how the names should be changed.

so what is Cynarina (=Acanthophyllia) deshayesiana? because mine looks just like the ones in the article, that are commonly called scolymia this is from that article The following links show Cynarina (=Acanthophyllia) deshayesiana mis-identified as Scolymia: http://www.jeffsabin.com/movabletype/photos/000362.html http://www.saltcorner.com/sections/z...Svitiensis.htm http://www.oceanviewenterprise.com/lps/Doughnut.html http://www.thepetstop.com/fish_shop/...rd_Corals.html http://www.phishybusiness.com/premium.php?offset=12 http://www.livingreefimages.com/Page54c.html |

Hey Jeremy,
It's kind of hard to follow those links. But one thing they have in common is that they are online venders selling corals, and not references. On that note, most of them have it right. Scolymia are meaty, bumpy, and mostly an opaque color. Cynarina are more smooth with large ridges that give almost a bubble look, and slightly clear. From your first link That is a Scolymia Second link Also Scolymia Third link, probably a Scolymia Forth link First one Scolymia Second one Cynarina That place is selling those two corals for the same price. I'd snatch up the orange one in a heartbeat for 30.00 Didn't see anything on the 5 link.(phishy) And sixth link Also Scolymia I would say they have these straight. As to what is Acanthophyllia, I would say it's in the same class as Wellsophyllia. A made up name in the industry with no scientific merits.
