Brandon,
I feel somewhat reassured, but the fact that it is spreading worries me. How often do they do this? And is it normal for them to spread?

I don't think that is just closed-up polyps. If so, it would be brown, or maybe a bit lighter, like the rest of the capitulum (head). To me it looks more gray/white, which is more typical of dying tissue (necrosis).

If you can, I would remove him from the tank (if possible), and swirl the head fairly violently in saltwater. If the gray spot washes away, it's almost certainly necrosis.

If you can't, use a pipette or syringe and try to "wash away" (gently, you don't want that in your tank, if it's decaying tissue) some of the gray spot.

If you can take him out of the tank and get all of the (maybe) dying tissue away, you might be able to save him, if you put him back in the tank and give him a lot of flow.

Sarcophyons are incredibly hardy once acclimated to your tank, but they can be very touchy when you first get them.

HTH,

brandon,
I don't mean to disagree...was just a suggestion...jn's looks much worse than yours. And I will say again that if there's tissue disintegrating, it's time for drastic action.

Is that a Mycedium in the upper left of your tank?

plz do disagree with me lol its good to have more than one observation and diffrent advice so we can all learn from people trials and mistakes. offering more than one persons advice is great and its better when people do disagree. i do agree with u though if there is tissue necrosis then he will need to frag thta piece off. any ways do u mean the big hard coral because if u do its a merlunia coral very agressive and a fast grower

Nice tank Brandon....also, thanks for the input...I will watch it for a few days. It has not extended any polyps since yesterday. I will watch it closely.

Well, I got home today and it has still not extended its polyps. Is it normal to go days without any extension? Thanks...

My toadstool sheds its skin every once in a while and will close completely, but never close only a small portion of it like yours, I dont like the looks of that and I agree that it doesnt look quite like brandon's. If it doesnt change in a couple days or it starts to get worse I would cut it off....

Well, Brandon was right. It is starting to extend today and it is shedding, actually shedding a lot! I guess no worries. I also removed the glass tops I had on the top of our aquarium. Don't know if was a problem or not. I was worried about gas exchange?? Anyway, that is why I am a member of this forum!!

salinity is a bit low but not awful just get it at 1.025 with ro water. ph is a bit low but im guessing ur trites are making it low. it needs to be at 8.2 but still thats not awful. ur nitrites are so low which is good probably another water change and they will be 0 and ur kh is good as well as ur temp

Any readable nitrite is toxic. Does "< 0.3" mean zero?
