Rio Pump - Stray Voltage

How often does a power head leak voltage? I was planning to add sand to my tank yesterday, but when I put my hands in the water the f-word slipped from my lips from the sharp tingle of 120 Voltage. 5 f-words later, I had it narrowed down to a rio power head. Just curious if that's a common issue. (ie, power heads leaking voltage, not f-words passing my lips under duress).

Also, I'm now in the market for a new power head. Any recommendations? Need something that will move the water around good in a 110g tall tank.

It happens from time to time. I would recommend a ground probe and some GFCIs for personal protection.

Some Koralia or Seio pumps might be a good idea. I haven't used either, though. I've had good luck with Maxi-Jets, but the flow from them isn't the broad stream the Koralia or Seio pumps produce.

Whats happing is you have a floating ground. A ground probe will fix that. I'm going to take a guess that the plug has only 2 prongs not three. That third prong is a ground and it makes sure that you have it pluged in corectally. If you simply flip the plug over you will no longer have your problem. Also a GFI is a must for a tank!

Everything should have three prongs on the plugs if possible and it is mandatory for the power strip to have three.

I had a bad power strip causing my stray voltage. Once I removed it...no more tingle.
