I'm in. My sandbed is about 9 months old, but fairly well populated - kind of excited to see how much more diverse it can become!

These sand-born critters are pretty tough. I got a detritivore kit from Rob Sullivan (RC member, posts often) last year in the middle of winter, and you may recall that it was not exactly a balmy January we had last year in these parts.
Never mind, I'll be quiet now.

But still, I can't help thinking it's mighty cold in Chicago in Feb. and March ...

Count me in for 2 bags also. Who knew even the critters need to get away from linebreeding!

Those of you wanting 2 bags will need to send 2 bags. (4 cups total). There is a priority mail flat rate box actually 2 to choose from that runs $7.70 in shipping each way. You'll need one of those - and I will too.

Remember everyone - if you don't have the USPS flat rate envelope and a box that will fit in it (preferably the VCR box) check your post office. Ordering them online takes 10-14 days (it's free though - so order a bunch)

Jamesurg,

I'm confused about the box. Is it item o-1093 http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/po...sp?OID=1003546

or is it O-FRB2 -- the flat rate box?

Uh, and is this the envelope the box supposedly fits in?

I'd agree - you are confused:

Here's the lowdown.

If you're doing 1 helping of sand (2 cups). You use this box:

http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/po...sp?OID=1003571

And cram it inside this enveolpe:

http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/po...sp?OID=1003563

If you're doing 2 helpings of sand (4 cups) You use this box:

http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/po...sp?OID=4849213

Let me know if anyone has any questions. Most locations should just have these in stock but if not - go ahead and order some.

We ship on February 7th - so you should have time.

I'm in. I have a 1.5 year-old sand bed.

I came across the last swap too late but thought, "what a good idea."

Thanks, it feels so good to be among the knowing. I'm sure I wasn't the only one in the dark, just secure enough to admit it.

Now, if I'm doing the 4 cups, I send you a check for $7.70. Who is it payable to? Blank? (That's like sending cash.)

And no need to send you any shipping supplies (except perhaps a return label).

Right?

count me in - I purchased some sand after the last swap also and it was fabulous. My sand is a 100 pounds from my old one year old tank added to 150 pounds of new SD - seeded with some stuff from IPS and a bunch of new rocks from all over. Can't wait - count me in for two portions.

OK, I gotta ask. What are "red bugs" and why are they bad. I think I may have them in my tank, and I thought they were some kind of pod and assumed they were good.

James,
These kind of posts scare me and lots of people. Maybe someone can post a pic of what red bugs and flatworms look like. If potential participants can identify them before you receive boatloads of sand from everyone it might make it easier and safer for you and everyone else.

OK - couple of things:

First - Dag,I'm sorry if I offended you. I tend to come accross as a little blunt... The check can be made out to me: James Urquhart. And yes - for 2 portions,it's $7.70 shipping.

Secondly, redbugs apparently cannot live without acros to live on (or so I've been told) - so with a 1 month quarantine we should be fine on ich and redbugs. Flatworms are another story.

Everyone - I will post all instructions and details in a single post closer to the date so that there's no confusion. I'd do it now - but I don't want ANY sand shipped until February 7th.

James, I wasn't offended. My thanks was sincere.

I was planning on quarantining the sand when I got it back anyway. Does anyone know how to treat the sand in a quarantine tank to remove flatworms? Maybe I should go have a chat with Dr. Ron ....
