MaxiJet mod

For those of you that have read about this in the DIY forum and wondered if it really works......YES. I built 2 for myself, the flow on these has supposedly been measured at close to 2,000 gph and I don't doubt it. I only have 1 running right now, it has my gsp laying flat, and my Millie polyps whipping around. Both are 4 feet away from pump and flow has been bounced off of the front glass first - these things are STRONG. Highly suggest you try this mod if you need / want Tunze like flow but don't want to spend the $$. This mod can be done in less than an hour for about $5.

I used the 1.75" props and am having second thoughts, may go down a prop size in my tank if I can't adjust them so my sand isn't blowing around.
(I also modified my Seio mounts so I can swivel these up / down and side to side)

I cut the suction cup piece for the MJ, then epoxied it to a U channel piece that came with the Seio. Cut the U channel so I just had a flat piece with the grooves that slid onto the ball socket piece. Of course the whole thing is epoxied to a magnet but you knew that

reefrubble - you made these too ? How did they work out for you ? If you need any more parts, there is a hobby shop in North Pinellas that ordered the props for me (They had everything else in stock). Cost was the same as on-line and I didn't have to pay shipping. If anyone needs parts pm me and I will give you the name of the hobby shop (don't have it in front of me right now)

Actually, I'm running a MJ1200 and a MJ900 both with a corksrew impeller. They're hooked to my ReefKeeper controller.

I've been into R/C boats (helis, cars, airplanes....) for a long time, so I have some props sitting around, but I like the looks and setup of what I have now.

...and yes, tons of flow 8-)

Emster - the black piece is actually just a 1 1/2" pvc slip coupling painted with black satin Krylon Fusion spray paint. It is not really attached to the Maxijet, it presses onto a 1 1/2" "knock out plug" made for pvc pipe. (Lowes has them with all of the other pvc fittings) This is real thin plastic and can be notched out with a razor knife to fit over the tabs on the MJ, then drill a hole in the center for the impeller body to slide through. Once you take the rubber O ring off the MJ this knock out plug fits the MJ real snug. The slip coupling then, well, slips on

I made the cuts in the slip coupling using a sliding sled on my table saw, but you could use a chop saw, Dremel, or whatever you may have that will cut pvc.

One other thing - I have 2 old (2+ years) MJ 1200's and they were having a difficult time turning these 1.75" props. I think these props are the very upper limit of what these pumps can turn, even when the pump is new. I trimmed my props a little (razor blade) and they work much better. I think I am going to step down to the 1.57" props as they should work better on these "older" pumps and still push more than enough water. I think the 1.75" props should just be used on newer pumps in 6' long tanks.

Hey David, Wow bro!! I have David's mod in my tank for a couple of days and it puts out MORE than my Tunze!! This thing is moving alot of water.
I will definitely be using these mods on my new 125g.
Nice work David and I love the magnet mod with the Seio swivel.

Can this mod be throttled back significantly by using a smaller prop or something? I have a smaller tank with fine sand and really can't take all that flow. But I'm interested in something like this.

amheck - yes. The thread in the DIY forum lists several props you can use from strongest to weakest. I started with the strongest, may have been an error in judgement on my part

Super. I'm also thinking about using a maxi900, so that might help with the reduced flow also. Thanks!

I couldn't get an "older" 900 to turn the 1.75" (largest) prop. I think the thread mentions those props don't always work with the smaller MJ900.

That thread mentions also using the smaller props on the MJ 600s,and 400s. If you have a smaller tank,I think that this may be the way to go. Ted

I have quite a few MJ1200's laying around. I have one of the AGA 120's 2ft x2ft x 4ft and I could definitely used the extra flow. I would really like to do this mod. I was thinking about checking out some of the local hobby shops in town to see if they stocked anything. Any of you guys in the area that have done this mod get the parts from one of the local shops? Morris Kohl is just around the corner from me. I talked to them on the phone today. He said that they have some props in stock, but not a whole lot. Just curious...

I don't know where that shop is, I ordered mine from a shop in Palm Harbor because I couldn't find any in stock around here. If interested, I ordered mine from House of Hobbies @ (727) 943-5800. The Dumas 3004 props (1.75") are only $1.25 each from them, and takes about a week to get them once ordered.
You are also welcome to stop by and see these working before you build yours if you want.
