Strange tendril

Hi Ron,

It looks like two blades (leaves) at the end of a long tendril that can stretch 12" easily from the liverock. Here are a series of images. What is it?

And is it anything to worry about?

Hi Marc,

It is the proboscis of a bonellid echiuran worm. See here for some more information. The worms are harmless detritivores.

cool, i did not know that sponges stretched out like that! the most i've seen him stretch out is about 6".

i swear he was 'lassoing' some neighboring paly frags and dragging them closer, heh!
