Ehiem Canisters

I heard that Ehiem Canisters are good for saltwater tanks and that a wet/dry filter system is not necessary since I want to do fish only.

Anyone knows if this is true.

They are good as long as you maintain your cleaning routine with them...they (like ALL filters) are not plug and forget....

I had (2) Ehiem's on my 120g FO system for a year. One was their wet/dry Pro and the other a standard mechanical one. Both work flawlessly. All I did was monthly cleaning. The Pro series is much better when it comes to cleaning.

With that said I am changing my system over to a Reef and putting in a sump and removing the canister filters. Reason is that I will have no filtration other then LR and skimmer.

Thanks

just doing the same as jim - changing from canisters to sump - ran the tank on 1 eheim and 1 fluvall - both worked fine but as said above keep them cleaned regular.

Seems like everyone using the eheim canisters are using two of them one wet/dry version and another for mechanical filtration.

Does either of them provide adequate biological and mechanical filtration for a fish only tank?

I might think if you used the wet/dry with mechanical pads in one of the three sections it might work. Not sure, never tried that but should work.

I tried to email you but didnt go through.

Thanks

I have a soft coral dominant reef tank, and I use an Ehiem canister for particulate filteration (aka water polishing) and to run carbon. I do not run any bioballs in it. I clean it regularly. It pulls a fair amount of junk out of the tank, and has never been a problem in terms of nitrates......
Wet dry filteration is not really required if you have enough live rock....regardless of if you have a reef or if you are FOWLR.
If you are running sumpless they are a nice option to be able to add carbon etc...

I have the eheim Pro II 2028. It is a great canister filter. Runs very quiet and has a push button primer. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a canister filter.

fakename -- do youlet your Eheim run 24/7 or just when you need to run carbon or polish the water?
