Sump Question
Guys,
I just transfered my 55 Gallon Reef tank, with Ehiem Filter and live Rock, to a 120 Gallon PreDrilled 4 Foot Tank with Oceanic Sump Underneath stand... I have a ton of white debris floating all over my tank... The sump has 2 heaters, Protein Skimmer, and UV Sterilizer inside... The Skimmer is a Hang on Back.. I just have it inside the sump with the attached MaxiJet 1200 Pump, and the water overflows right back in... Seems to be skimming well, dirty collection cup... My UV I have with a simple pump on the right side where the intake water is, and I ran the UV with some simple tubing around the top of the sump, and back into the left side of the sump where the return out take is... The UV Return and the Skimmer return don't seem to be kicking the debris around that is settled.. I also have a bag of carbon, and bag of Phosban in the water as well.... Question... I see debris settled on the bottom... How often do I need to clean that out, and how do I do it?? Siphon it out?? Would this be the white debris I'm seeing floating around my tank?? The Debris looks almost like it's yellowish.... Any help or suggestion would be appreciated... Tank is running 2 weeks now since transfer... This is my first setup with a sump....

I agree with the filter sock idea. You can even make them if you wish or buy them.

When you disturb your sand, like you do in a move, there’s bound to be MUCH debris. The filter sock will capture them and capture them well. Like bobbet43 said, change them out often. What return pump are you using? You want to make sure you have a decent turn-over rate with your return pump and take into consideration your head pressure/head height. I think that any HOB skimmer will be too small for a 120 with a decent size sump. You may consider buying or making a bigger skimmer. |
