Depends on the T5 setup, it will have a better spread for sure. Tank dims?

For soft corals I'd do 4 to 6 T5's. For LPS's I'd do at least 2 150w MH bulbs. I'd prefer to supplement them with T5's too. For SPS's I'd do 2 250w MH+T5's IMO.

I agree, 2x150 is what I would do if you plan on an LPS/Softy tank. Some anemone's are very light demanding though. For SPS and anemone's, I would do 250's.

Will this lighting be in a hood or planning on getting a fixture?

I would do 6 54 watt t5ho with individual reflectors. If it is going to be a retro. I would use icecaps to overdrive them to around 83 watts.
If those dem are right. 48x20x12 is a 50. A 90 would be something like 48x18x24.

I don't know much about a full T5 set up, but on my 75 I have 2*250 MH and 2*54 T5, tank is SPS, anemones ( haddoni carpet ) and a clam.

Then go with a retrofit kit using t5s. 6x54w setup w/ slr reflectors is more than enough light for sps, clams and nems. Check out my build thread to see how my sps are doing. Thats 324w total, i'm not overdriving any of the bulbs, just using individual reflectros for each bulb. Everyone seems to underestimate t5s. Also, a 90g dimensions are 48"x24"x18".

I have 3 tanks ( 75, 58, and 29 ) all have MH lighting. My electric bill is about $150 ( a bit higher in the summer, AC ). Mind you I have my TV and 1000 watts of a stereo on all the time too.

It really matters were you live. Different places pay different amounts.

My electric bill went up about 10.00 after adding 2 250watt 10k's. My house is all electric so even with the winter heat bills and summer air I think 10.00 isn't to bad. I keep my house at 78 all year round.

On a 48" long tank, if you wanted to use MH, you would have to do at least 2 MH bulbs because of their small spread. You will get better spread from T5's, but you would have to do 6 of them with individual reflectors to get the best output. I like T5's, you just have to do them the right way if you want to get the success that a crappy MH setup can give you.

For MH I'd look in to Hamilton Lighting. For T5's, Aquatinics and Sunlight Supply...

I have a 75 gallon tank with t-5's. I have 2 coralvue retrofits on it. That's 4 bulbs with individual reflectors. I have had no problems with too little coral lighting. I have lots of lps and sps. Hope this helps.
