How to seal starboard for BB tank
last christmas i removed the sand bed from my tank and put down starboard. i didnt think that sealing the starboard to the bottom of the tank was that big of deal. I quickly learned that the this was a bad idea. I know have a large amount of detrius traped under the starboard. I plan to empty out the tank this weekened because it needs to be moved. while i am at it, i would like to remove the detrius and seal down the starboard. i know that most people use silicone but i know that sillicone has a long drying time. I do not have arangements for storing fish and coral overnight. what can I use to seal the starboard down. is there a quick drying silicone?

I do not feel it is necessary if you cut the board small enough so that it doesnt rest on the silicon seams of your tank, but on only the glass.
The silicone at the edges raise up a bit, and that can cause detritus to get underneath; you need the length and width of the starboard to be less than the silicone in the seams, so that it rests perfectly flat on the glass. |

thanks, but is there still a way to seal it? i am worried that it wont work as planed and i will have to do this all over again.
also, If I am able to use silcone, what brands of silicone can I use. I know some types shouldnt be used with fish tanks. Last edited by reefman77; 12/27/2007 at 06:39 PM. |

if you are going to use silicone use the GE doors and windows. there are two versions, 1 & 2, do not use #2 it has bioseal which may be harmful to aquariums. can find it at home depot. i am planning to do the same thing as you with my new 90 gal. my plan is that even though the board will be small enough not to sit on the silicone, i want extra assurance. my plan is to buy large caulking gun tube size of the silicone, then just going to run a line of silicone that goes from top edge of board to glass. technically silicone and the board wont really seal together but usually it will help keep board down and debri from getting underneath it

I already redid my bare bottom once; the first time it was like yours and detritus piled underneath.
I redid it, as I stated, and I have had no problems with detritus underneath. It was also good enough for Bomber that he doesnt feel sealing it is necessary. |
