It can be an acceptable way to reduce high alkalinity with no long term effects at all if done correctly, but it is very potent and you can easily overshoot the alkalinity goal, or drive the pH way too low.

What is the alkalinity? I usually recommend just letting it drop on its own if it is too high.

If I may,

DKH of 14? I just don't see that being possible if your not adding anything to your water There's only so many things to look for
1) your testing wrong
2) The test kit is bad
3) your salt mix is really bad (this is doubtful)
4) you have a piece of decoration made with portland cement or lime in it.
5) you used Kalkwasser or an addative that increased your dkh.

Randy is certainly right, It will go down on its own no question about that. It would probably be faster to start doing water changes though. You do need to find out what brought it up to that point in the first place or at least check to see if your test is good.
No point in the water changes if you don't find that out first, you may end up doing a 360.

So whats the DKH of the ocean water your using? That would be your standard. If it's 8 and over time it go's to 14 without adding anything then something else is boosting DKH. I don't see how it can raise that high without an outside source. Unless there's some natural bio or chemical reaction that is raising it. Which I'm not aware of.

From what I can see from the picture , the tank looks good. Just need to find out what is causing the high DKH.

I don't know Nitratelock, maybe it has something in it thats raising the dkh, it's worth testing. Try using some fresh saltwater with 7dkh and drop some in and mix it around then test. It's always something to try. I doubt the purigen is doing that.

Besides that I really don't have an answer to your problem if your starting at 7 dkh and not adding anything, then something is really strange and beyond my knowledge.

Try measuring the top off water that you are using with your alkalinity kit.
