Unhappy OT: The kitties dont like the baby

My brother and his wife recently had a beautiful baby girl. Unfort. their two cats do not like this new addition to the family. So my brother's wife is giving up her cats. She really doesn't want to put them into a shelter because they are older and she is afraid that they won't get adopted. They are great cats and have moved with her many times with no problem. Dave, the black and white one, is about 9 and can be somewhat shy...although he will do anything for food. Ms Kitty, the calico, is only a few years old and is very vocal and affectionate. She would love to see both cats go to the same home if it is at all possible. I would take the cats for them but they are long hair and my boyfriend is alergic. Thanks for reading this...hopefully it will all work out for them.

Just curious, what are the cats doing to the baby? Or are they just being overly paranoid like most new parents?

The cats are doing nothing directly to the baby. They are marking the house. My brother and his wife have been consulting with their vet for a few weeks now with things to do but it was suggested that it may be best for the cats and the baby that the cats be put in a new more quite home...hopefully together.

I can suggest one thing that might actually save their happy home: Feliway. It's a pheromonal spray that says "happy cat." If you spray it on every door and place where they're marking, spray it on a cloth and place it near [not on] the baby, and generally remove the 'stressed cats here!' pheromones with this preparation, you may stop the marking and adjust their attitudes. This is a case of dropping into 'cat-speak' temporarily to say things in a way they get; the 'happy cat here' message will calm them and they usually won't stress-mark over it.

My sister's cats kept marking all her baby's things--clothes, bassinet, everything!
