I was reading another thread about sps growth and rather then hijack that thread I thought I should start my own thread.

I realize different corals will not grow at the same rates and monti's usually grow faster then acros ect but after reading that other thread I suspect I am getting phenomenal growth relative to some

Ok but everyone is going to be very disappointed.
The only thing I add to the tank is fish food, kalkwasser and RO top off water. I do occasional water changes, have activated carbon and a pathetic red sea berlin protien skimmer.

I have just about every pest algae you can get in there, a regal angel that trims my acros regularily and daytime polyp extension is non existant because of the angel.

I have 3 250w DE 10k metal halides on for 10 hours and 2 vho (actinic and 10k) on for 13 hours. There is a basement sump with some caulerpa and live rock and a calcium reactor that can't keep up. Hmmm anything else?

One of the guys who had a previous tank of the month kept a large angel with his SPS. He reported that it appeared that wherever his angel nipped the corals, the faster it appeared the corals regrew... (I'm sorry I can't reference the Tank of the month that this was)

I wonder if this might have anything to do with the growth??

Maybe the Kalkwasser has something to do about the fast growth; It bindes Carbon-dioxide, increase the pH and make it easier for corals to calcify that way.

Its not the kalk. I designed my system to evap a ton of water for its size so I could saturate kalk and use it for my primary alk/ca source for a little while with occasional dosing of 2 part. I am not getting growth like that. My suspect is the 3 10K 250 mh..which bulbs are you running? I get decent growth, but its like watching grass grow for a couple of hours on some frags. One thing people don't understand is a growth rate is the same for the coral but a frag of the same coral that is a colony....both will double, but the colony will look like alot more growth because it had alot more to double up ....you see what I am saying?

if you want to see real fast growth, get some 6500s

nice tank.
red sea berlin or turbofloater is just fine,

and that is all it takes:
good light, some skimming, cool water and kalk.. flow helps

Say no more. A typical 10k halide has twice the PAR of 14k+ bulbs, with the right conditions this means much more growth.
