What is the key to keeping SPS alive?
Like the subject says. I've had few Sps before and didn't have much luck for more than a year. Please give me some insight.
Thanks, Mike |

can you tell us a little about your tank? ie. nitrate, phos, ca, alk, mg, pH, and lighting.

The key is consistancy.

Right now I running a Zoa and clam tank. I would like to start another tank with strictly SPS and was wanting to know what to do.

Just b sure that the tank is mature enough,& that your params are in check at all times.

I always see these huge tanks with nothing but Sps. Just makes wonder how its all done. I know high calcium is needed, so is a reactor a must, a refugium??? Sps only?? My LFS has a 180 with SPS, LPS, Zoas, and softies and it has been thriving for years. On the other hand the most respected LFS guy says do not mix Lps, Sps, and softies.. So... I dunno, I see sweet tanks and I would like to someday have one myself.

Along with the "keys" Gary Majchrzak pointed out.....flow is important. I use to have problems keeping sps also I kept nutrients low, good MH lighting, steady cal, alk,pH,salinty params nothing worked! I then increased the flow in my tank going from about 10-15 times turnover to 25 times per hour turn over. BINGO! everything perked up and started growing!

I use a sea swirl in a 52 g to reach all parts of the tank with a mag 9.5. I hand-dose calcium, have alk buffer in my topoff water, and have my lights on a timer. I keep both sps and lps together, with a raft of discosoma mushrooms that hitchhiked in, lots of sponges, a number of fish, a ton of bristleworms, a few aiptasia, and a clam. I have 250 w 10000k mh lighting with actinic supplement, and the mh is on 8 hrs a day. The main thing is to do nothing suddenly. I also recommend Phosban and a good skimmer, to keep the crud out. I have a lot of fish waste and urchin poo floating about at any given time. I have an aragonite base with 70lbs of live rock, amply corallined. My tank is not pristine or low nutrient, but acros are growing, and I've had to frag out two digitatas that had just gotten too big; a foliosa will be soon to follow, and I've fragged two acroporas this month, with good success. I feed a shameless amount of cyclopeeze, pellet, oyster eggs [some], and phyto [a lot.]

Stability is the most important aspect. your perameters shouldnt fluctuate
Keep your perameters good, give em lots of flow, and lots of light and you should be fine |

stability is the most important key. How to get stability?good equipment skimmer, top off,cal reactor, lighting, flow or wave making device ect....your equipment will keep your water stability 24/7 and you only need to dose and water change weekly.
And stay with this forum since you will learn a lot from this forum....

I use a 1/2 inch Sea Swirl because that was what was in stock. I had to scale down my 1" tubing to accommodate. Kind of blows the fish sideways, but they adjust, and I think it gives them a good workout. I don't know how long this poor unit can cope with being mounted on a downflow wall in reach of the salt creep and downscaled from a 1" outflow, but 6 months on it's still going strong. It was the only place I could put it, and it's made an immense difference in all my corals: lps have doubled in size, and certain acros have really taken off. I've also undertaken a more aggressive skimming: skimming wet with my little Urchin, and dumping skimmate every 3 days. The millepora that had done zip for months is suddenly growing.
I'm also on the tail end of my lights, which I was told would last a year. So I'm going to replace those, in the theory they can still be giving light to see by, but maybe not enough to grow by. Oyster eggs have been welcomed by certain sps. Don't know if it's the be-all and end-all food, but I figure a few more frags per year will easily pay for them.

I heard not to use activated carbon on reef tanks long term because they can pull out so many beneficial things. Does carbon help lower phosphates??

I want to tag a long. I had beautiful growth but I think with time and age the detrius and what not have stuck in my system and thus I have been experiencing algae.
I am remedying by increaseing my water changes and will try to increase flow. Hopefully this will work. |

Is a cal reactor a must for sps?
