Quick coral frag question
I've got two frags of green frogspawn coral and two candy canes. If I place both of the same corals on the same rock (frogspawn with frogspawn, candy cane with candy cane), will they sting each other? I'm not sure if they're originally from the same mother coral.
Thanks for any advice (and thanks to everyone who replied to my first posting, all of your opinions were really helpful). Diane Last edited by sapphiredonna; 01/04/2008 at 07:52 AM. |

To the best of my knowledge, two separate frags or colonies of coral that are of the same species should be innocuous to each other. Thus, they if grow into each other and make physical contact they will not do any harm.
I think it would be wise to keep the two unrelated corals at a distance, since Frogspawn can extend stinging sweepers to ward off intruding corals. As a rule of thumb, I generally reserve several inches of space to allow growth and polyp extension without contact for all corals; except Zoanthids and Mushrooms...those guys I believe are okay to touch anything. Just for fun here is a pic of how nasty some of these kids can be. The coral at the bottom (Hydnophora) attacked and digested away a head of my Hammer Coral (related to your Frogspawn) several months ago.

Agreed- the frog will sting the candy to death.

I would keep them all separated so later I can sell them if I wanted to. Both are fast growers and why not make a little cash or trade down the road and pick up something new.
