Here are a few pictures of my new acro. It has been in quarantine for the last couple of days. I'll dip it and place it in my reef later today, hopefully.
I've got no clue what it is, but due to the girth of the branches, I'm thinking it can handle some serious flow. Hopefully it will like my tank.

Hi Marc,
Awesome pictures and thanks for the info on the Nitrate reactor, I subscribed to that thread and may make one based on your experiences. One quick question, I currently have a sump made by Trigger Systems and it's nice and all, but not really what I want. I therefore have taken the plunge and have ordered the parts for a new sump from Tap plastics and will be assembling it this week. The sump is based on your Model F design, but slightly shorter (34 inches long). My question is: If I am using 1/4 inch acrylic, do I HAVE to brace it at the top ??? I have enough acrylic to brace it, just I'd rather not. I was originally going to use thicker acrylic, but the price starts doubling and then tripling when going to the thicker acrylic sheets. Advice ?? Thanks again for all of the great info and I hope to meet you at MACNA this year. |

I would brace it. I made a custom sump for my 58gal and it is bowing pretty good now If I had to do it over I'd brace it

I would also brace it, rather be safe than sorry!

jimmyPx - not to drag Marc's thread off course too far, but what didn't you like about the Trigger Systems sump? They get pretty good reviews overall.

The top brace is important. If you made the sump out of 3/8", you could get away from making it without one.
Here's a picture of one I made last month. It was very small, and similar to the Model A on my site:

I dipped the A. austera in some ReVive for about 20 minutes, more than was necessary, then placed it in my reef. Hopefully it will respond well to my tank.
The two blue torts look happy in my tank, even though they are tiny. The first one was being approached by a green frilly mushroom that I peeled out of the tank today. The second one is doing very well and looks pretty to the eye, but to my camera it is very little to talk about. I'm seeing some more of this brown stuff on my rockwork which annoys me. I'm hoping it is just some temporary thing that will bloom and fade out again, but I'm afraid it might be dinos since that was on the back glass recently. My skimmer has suddenly gone nuts for no reason twice in the past week, filling the cup with 1.5+ gallons of watery clear fluid.

The A. austera looks cool. Does it have any PE yet? How long have you been using ReVive?

The coral hasn't exhibited any polyp extension yet, but that isn't unusual in my experience. It may only open up at night, which I'll check via flashlight.
I got ReVive at the CRASE conference in October. It is a dip, and I don't acquire a lot of new corals so it has only been used 3 or 4 times now.

Bart, the two Torts I got from you are in my prop section, and they really need to move up on a Frag Mag in the reef. Several pieces look good, but a few didn't make it.

Not quite yet, but I've seen bubbles on my LR lately while taking pictures.

You could always run out (or if you have one) use a ratchet type strap that is used for securing cargo in like a truck.

Hi Spleen, The Trigger sump is very nice (that's why I bought it originally). I have the original Berlin Refugium sump. The new design is here: http://www.triggersys.com/more_info_..._refugium.html In the original and the one that I have, the refugium is not lengthwise, but on on end and then the rest is divided in half with one side having a floss drawer and the other the area for the skimmer and return. I personally dont like the design because the drawer is a pain to use (and I dont) and I have large hands and it is really hard for me to clean the sump areas out when doing a water change. In addition, I dont like the 3 bulkheads because I had to split the feed line in 3 and use ball valves to adjust the flow. I would also like a larger refugium and area for the skimmer (I maybe upgrading my Euroreef RS80 to an Octopus Extreme 150 soon). Finally, I have a 60 gallon cube tank (24in x 24in x 24in) and I have the sump and gear in a converted tv cabinet next to the tank. For some reason it is 35 inches wide and my current sump is only 30 inches long and I want the 4 more inches Anyway, I won't hijack Marc's thread any further and thanks everyone for the advice ( I really need to update my web page) |
