Ca reactor question

All,

I am thinking of bulding my own Ca reactor for my 120 gallon tank. I have looked at many website and have seen that most Ca reactors for a tank this size are about 18" or 19" tall and have a chamber with an OD of 4" or 5". Unfortunately, the piece of acrylic tubing that I have available is not that tall, it is only 11" tall, but it has an OD of 6". Can I still use this piece of tubing to make my own Ca reactor for my 120 gallon tank that will contain mostly SPS? I guess what I don't know is what is more important when it comes to a Ca reactor, the total volume of the height of the reactor?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The tubes are usually tall so that as the CO2 travels up the media it has more dwell time in the media.

So are the shorter say 12 inch reactors more of a problem for co2+ lower tank PH??

Go for it.

The grotech's are somewhat squat, as well as H&S and Ratz. They all do the same thing.

The chamber might be a bit on the small size in terms of media volume. be sure to keep this in mind during construction. If you have to add media often, try to make it as easy as possible.

MeuserReef: I don't have any links... I really wish I did though. I have mainly been looking at websites and trying to take the ideas of other manufacturers.

Ewan: Thanks for the heads up on these other manufacturers. I'll have to look them up and see what they have. I did end up finding that MyReefCreations also makes a smaller Ca reactor. The one that I saw has a chamber that is 12" tall and 6" in diameter, very close to the piece of acrylic that I have to work with.

I will also keep convenience in mind as I am designing the reactor. As I don't know how quickly I will go through the media with a shorter Ca reactor I will try to make it as convenient as possible to add media.

I found this calcium reactor built out of a water filter. I'm going to give it a try.

The build on that link is great - I'm going to try that.

the size of the recirc pump is more the limiting factor than the size of the tube. since it is a recirculating chamber, it's virtually infinite in size. with a big pump, all a smaller chamber (within reason) means is you will have to refill it more often than a larger chamber.

I got the filter housing, it's about six inches in diameter. It's bigger than the normal water filters you see out there. Probably will hold 4 to 5 lbs of media. Was looking at a calcium reactor at a LFS, the chamber on that one was about 2 inches in diameter and about 12 inches high. Also picked up the quiet one pump at Petsmart for 35 bucks. With fittings, filter and pump, invested around 125 dollars so far. Now the fun begins, assembly.

Manderx - thanks for that explanation. That makes a lot of sence to me.
