Lollipop Tang???
I visited my LFS tonight and they had a "Lollipop Tang" for sale. Has anyone ever heard of this fish? I know this is the common name but the kid working there could not tell me the genus it belonged to. Any help would be great because this was an awesome looking fish. I wish I could have taken a picture but the kid that was there was pretty rude when I took my phone out to take a pic. This is not my usual LFS.

can you describe the fish (Colors, shape etc.) or locate a pic of it on fishbase?

It honestly looks like a cross between a Powder Brown and an Achilles. It definitely looks like it belongs in the Acanthurus genus but I want to be sure before I purchase as I do have a Scopas and they seem to be very aggressive toward their own genus. I've tried locating it on a fish database for the past hour but have not seen anything exactly...what I described above is the best description I can give.

A. japonicus is usually associated with the the lollipop tang. Some LFS cofuse this fish with the White cheek tang which is not nearly as hardy as the japonicus "lollipop" tang.

Well I went out and picked it up. Thanks Gary Majchrzak
and mile sq. reefer for the additional info. I think what was confusing me the most when looking at the pics was I was looking for exact coloration. The tang that I picked up has more orange in it (mostly upper dorsal fin but does have some on the lower fin). Thanks for all your help, it is an awesome fish. I just hope it takes well to the tank. |
