Hi After much research and thinking i have decided to start with fresh water aquarium can anyone direct me to a freshwater site that is comparable to this site.


(wish i could afford saltwater maybe in a few months or years)

This can be quite an expensive hobby and you show incredible responsibility by waiting until you can afford to do it right. Too many hobbyist attempt to cut corners and fail, or purchase substandard equipment only to spend more by upgrading later.

While enjoying a freshwater tank, I'd recommend reading as much on SW as possible to better educate yourself. When your ready financially, you'll also have the knowledge necessary to be successful.

In the meantime I suggest checking out http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ for fresh and saltwater information.

Actually with all the DIY projects and used supplies there could be minimal upfront cost which is the most expensive then a great reef tank blows away any FW tank. IMO

A properly done FW planted tank can drop jaws too You can set up a pretty pimp FW tank with just the money you would spend on live rock and a nice skimmer I used to think all that stuff was expensive until I got a reef tank!

My wife wanted a planted tank. It cost maybe 1/4 the cost of just my sump setup and I built my sump. I actually like it to. I think a planted tank(although not the same) needs the care that you have to give to your reef tank.

Pretty much the same. Halide lighting, CO2 supplementation and steady water parameters. Biggest difference is the cost of livestock and amount of equipment. FW plants can be pickier than corals IME!!

Another option is to start with a brackish water tank. I'm not sure what brackish fish you have but over here in Aus there are some very nice species.
Excellent colors, some amazingly aggressive (Which I like!)
Alot of them get pretty big though...
Also alot of them can be kept in salt water too if you decide to try a salt fish only tank later.
Sorry to put another option out there after you've just made your mind!
I just think It would also give you an easier intro to keeping a sw tank.
