Crabs
Curious, how many people have emerald, or scavenger crabs, and how do they benefit you tanks?

Emerald crabs seem fine although they are opportunistic meat eaters.
Hermit crabs and snails just don't seem to mix. Sooner or later the hermits kill the snails for their shells or for some sick pleasure-who knows

I have emeralds, sally light foots, and hermits and I would say that they don't benefit the tank much in terms of clean up. I keep them because I think they are interesting creatures, but as far as benefit for the tank goes, they don't do much.

Hermits with snails usually get a bad wrap. Yes they can kill snails for their shells, but the hermits don't all out assault the snails. At least mine don't. They live together pretty well. I put in extra shells for the hermits so they are more inclined to go for empties rather than a snails.
The hermits have a lot of personality they bring to the tank. I think the more diverse the cleanup crew the better.

Scarlet Hermits are totally reef safe. I've had a half dozen for a year and I've never witnessed them killing a snail.

I had a few hermits, and a real nice lookin snail. Then one day I saw the hermit (seemed like he tripled in size) cruisin around in the snail's shell.
Then you'd hear the hermit tapping on the glass all the time when he walked around. I got tired of it and got rid of it |
