brine shrimp outdoors

I just hatched my first batch of brine shrimp (I wanted to get into breeding some thai bettas).
I noticed several large empty waste containers next to my shed. I was curious if I added the salt and put the small batch in there--would they grow to adulthood. I figured the few leaves in the container would create infusoria.

I have no idea. You might cover the top of your containers with some type of mesh or screen material to keep impurities and bugs out of the culture.

Sorry to dredge up this old thread, but I happened upon it while looking for something else. Mainly I'm wondering if you ever tried it and how it worked? I've read in Joyce Wilkerson's "Clownfishes" book about doing something similar with brine shrimp and copepods. She makes it sound so simple - let the container grow algae and they'll feed off that as well as any other incidentals that happen to fall in. I get the impression that bugs like mosquitos won't breed in the containers since saltwater is used.

John, you might need to give it a shot and let us know what happens.

I plan to give it a try, but I might need to wait for it to cool off just a bit (it's a bit hot right now in SoCal). And the BIGGEST challenge will be making sure my wife doesn't see it as an eyesore!

Oh yeah, I said "brine shrimp and copepods" but what I meant to say was "brine shrimp and rotifers."
