Re-aquascaped tank with pillars!

Here are some before & after pics of my 210. Aquabucket (Spike) and I drilled 1/2 holes in the LR, then used acrylic rod to stack the rock (like a Ka-Bob). Worked really cool. Same amount of rock in the tank before and after (really). Thanks for the help Spike.

Red plant??

Its a type of red gracilaria according to Spike. The 4 tangs (2 yellow, 1 powder blue, and 1 naso) don't even give it a look. Thought they would chow it down.

I am leaning towards Gracilaria curtissae. I think it is a beautiful macro and looks good in a display tank.

Did you affix the acrylic rod to a base to provide stability? I love that look, and may want to duplicate that in my next tank.

Instead of using acrylic bases we just placed the largest and heaviest pieces of rock on the bottom. It turned out to be quite stable.

You can get the rod at Midland plastics in GB. We did not use prefab rounded rod though. Instead we cut 1/2" strips from a 1/2" thick sheet of plexi. Using a square rod in the round holes was not the best way to go as it was difficult to turn the rocks and get them to face the way we wanted. In the end it worked out fine though.

Acrylic rods?

I have some 1/2 acrylic that I cut 1/2 & 1/2 square strips and we gently pounded them through the drilled holes.

Wow - that's awesome! How'd you drill through the rock? Didn't it tend to bust apart on you?

I like it too. Did you have any ammonia or nitrate spikes after taking the live rock out of the tank to be drilled? How long was the rock out of the water?

No ammonia spikes or anything. The first thing we did was drain 40 gallons or so of water from the tank into 2 bins. The first bin had a heater and a powerhead in it. In this bin we placed all the corals that we removed from the tank and rock. The second bin was for the larger pieces of rock we took out for the pillars. This bin only had a heater. The rest of the rock stayed in the tank. We replaced the tank water with new saltwater so essentially the tank simply had a good sized water change.

That looks great!!

I tried the same thing, but it didn't turn out as nice as yours!! Must be the tank size difference!

I think a standard AGA 210 is 29" tall.

Midland plastics usually has a good quantity of plastic rod for sale right in the showroom. Its mainly some pretty funky colors but for this application who cares. Looks really good Woody! By the way heard from Paul lately??????

I have about 4-5 feet of 3/8in acrylic rod and a 3/8in masonry bit if anyone is interested I used a few to hold some large rocks off the bottom its a great idea and adds strength to your rockwork, also mounting frags doesn't create a landslide
