asm g4x, pump question

I am using the sedra 9k as a recirc pump and originally I was feeding the skimmer through the overflow, but even with a ball valve cranked 1/2 I could not keep it from overflowing sometimes.

So I decided to use an mj1200. The problem with using this pump is that it doesn't seem strong enough. I get descent skim, but the gate valve is more or less closed because the pump isn't strong enough. I would assume that it would be better to have more flow through the skimmer and have the gate valve more open.

Any recommendations for pumps?
would a Ocean Runner3500 be too strong?
I was thinking of this pump with a ball valve. is using a ball valve asking for trouble? as I would have to play with both the ball valve and the gate valve to make the skimmer work correctly.

1. tee off your drain or
2. use a Mag 3 ( or similar 350-400gph) as the feed pump.

Get a needlewheel Sedra 5000 and use it as a feed pump.

saltyESQ, I'm getting ready to install the same skimmer and plan on Teeing off my drain line. I am going to put a gate valve on the drain line and use it to backflow the skimmer. This way, if the skimmer can't handle the full return gph, I can crack open the valve and bleed off some of the water.
