Thanks Shiva and W E L C O M E to RC (don't know where to get that animation with the fish swiming and the big blue letters...). I really don't know about Ca and KH levels because my tests are old and not to be trusted, as soon as I get new ones I post here the results. But I guess the levels are the same (or a bit lower because calcification of the few stony corals in the tank) as NSW I'm using, the Ca reactor is just waiting the refilling of the CO2 bottle to get started.

Thank you again for your kind words CamBarr

Thanks for the welcome, I've been hanging around here for some time, I just never took the time for writing a post here on RC ...

You don't experience side-affects from the NSW?

Keep up the good work!

Hi use NSW for more than 15 years. I live 15min. from the sea and use the same place to collect water as the local Public Aquarium - www.aquariovgama.pt/ that does regular chemical analysis. What kind of side-effects do you mean?

Why is your tank "dry"?

Regards

Hi,

On the Dutch forum (www.zeewaterforum.org), there have been some discussions about the use of NSW. It seems that in our region (north sea) the water can contain some stuff that can cause algae to bloom in the aquarium. Also the salinity of that water tends to be quite low, so additional ''salting'' is required.

There are people that use NSW though!!

Off course I don't know anything about the seawater in
Portugal ...

My tank isn't dry anymore , that was when I logged in the first time on RC. Right now I have a ''sumparium'' or ''Seriatoporarium'', hahahahahahaha!!!

Just wanted to say that I thought the tank looks awesome and It seems to be a very nice system. your pics made me think how cool it would be to have a fuge above the tank~ maybe someday when I have $ i'll be able to build a system as cool as yours!

Hey RR,

Love what you have done.
I think it is great that you use NSW. Can I ask how do you get it from the sea to the tubs you have? Is it pumped or dragged up in small buckets to the bigger buckets?

Also in this journey you have embarked on - has it managed to make it financialy viable as a business - I guess I'm trying to say has it paid for the cost yet?

Best of luck.

Andrew

RR
At the beginning stage of your built you made your own 42g sump, what thickness glass did you use?

Dude, I rarely make it through a 6 page thread in one sitting.

Your prop tanks rock.

I wish you were my neighbor. I'd bug the hell out of you.

This is similar to what I have been brainstorming for a couple years now, but havent been able to setup due to moving so much. I want to setup something like this, except on a larger scale, maybe 8-10 of that style system

Very, Very impressive. You've got my attention on this thread~!

Hi, I love your tank size. It looks like a tide pool, very nice . I'm looking to build myself a tank about the same dim 96"x18"x11". It's not for a prop tank but a display tank. I like shallow. My LFS built many 96x24x13 using 3/8" (10mm) glass and everything seems to be ok. Do you think 10mm would be enough for my tank size? Thanks

Thanks for all the kind words.

Slavesque, I would go 12mm, more safe this way. Best of luck with your project!

The hottest temperatures have passed and I'm very satisfied with the water temperatures during July and August. Soon I'm going to finish lighting for the 2nd prop tank, this tank is already running with live rock for a few months.

Regards

Totally awesome!
One of the things I love about RC is that I can read about what my fellow reefers are doing across the pond.
I really love your approach, efficiency! Keep updating and of course .. more pics

Hi guys and gals, here's the pics I took yesterday with actinics on. Sorry for the long delay updating this post.

Sunday past I have attended at the 2nd anniversary of our portuguese reef discussion forum www.reefforum.net and had the opportunity to talk personally with Mr. Anthony Calfo about my prop system. From this talk I've decided that I'm not going to use any substrate for my 2nd prop tank (hard corals, SPS). Coral feeding is important and some kind of food must be provided to corals, maybe I'll get again into plankton cultures.

Crowded mixed tank with cyano algae appearing

Turbinaria reniformis from Red Sea

Photosynthetic gorgonia from Duarte Conceicao reef tank

Montipora australiensis from Juca reef tank

Red Montipora digitata from Joao Ribeiro reef tank

Caulastrea sp.

Nice Acropora from Joao Ribeiro reef tank

Psammocora sp.

Lobophyton pauciflorum

Very nice! A sweet system like that and NSW to top it off! Just too cool! Looks like a bunch of happy coral frags to me.

Hi,

My prop system has now 1 year and is almost done. Hard and soft corals are in separate tanks. I modified the lighting in both tanks to 2 x 150W HQI (10 000K) + 2 x 36W T8 actinics to save on the electricity bill. I'm doing bi-weekly water changes of 20% using NSW. Both tanks have auto top-off systems with kalk adition (Tunze osmolator + Calcium dispenser). The upper tank (hard corals) is going to have a Ca reactor (Aquamedic 1000).

Photos from last week:

Comments and critics welcome

This prop system looks more like a display. I like it. Fantastic work.
