Moving a DSB

This is perhaps started in the wrong forum, but I figured the sharp group of people here may be able to answer this question because this may have been something some of you have dealt with during upgrades to your large reef tanks. I tried doing some searching with the search feature, but I couldn't find the info I was loking for.

I may be moving a tank soon that has a well established 4" DSB. Sand is expensive, so I would love to be able to keep the existing DSB.

I understand that it is best to leave a DSB undisturbed while moving an aquarium and it is highly advised that if a DSB is disturbed that one should throw out all the old sand, keeping just a little to reseed an all new DSB. I don't think that moving the aquarium with all of the sand in it will be a possibility because there are a few flights of stairs involved in this move.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with moving a DSB the following way:

1 - With water still in the tank, stir the crap out of the DSB effectively (hopefully) rinsing the sand, and toss out all of the scummy water.

2 - Move the tank and dump the rinsed sand in

3 - Refill the aquarium and let it sit for a week filled with just sand and water (and necissary equipment)

4 - Perform a huge water change, wait another week and test the parameters before adding some "guinea pigs".

Has anyone done something similar to this? Would this get all of the toxins out from stirring the DSB? Any suggestions or concerns that I'm not addressing?

Thanx for your time.
