since i have a 55 gallon which is 20" tall and i am going to be housing 2 250w halides and 4 65w actinic power compacts, what is a decent height in which i should build my canopy?

Ok, I was looking into custom stands/canopies, and forget that. Way WAY too expensive! Plus for the time and effort put into it, definitely not worth it IMHO. Looks like I will be going with a piece of fabric drapped over a 2x4 stand, haven't decided what to do with the canopy, probably the same thing, just worried about heat/fire issues with fabric and halides.

I guess that depends on what you want to build. My stand and "canopy" cost less than $150 total

What is killing me is the doors and trim. I wanted to make it look nice, nothing extravagant. Seems the best is just drap some fabric over the stand, maybe over the hood as well, at least it will be good for dissipating heat.

Sorry for all the messy shots, the tank always has something to do like organizing wires or some other daunting task.

unclefrosby i liked how you had the gas shocks on them which makes like way more easier...where did you get the shocks from and how much were they?

coralsb4bills- what kind of reflectors are you using for your halides?

dazed- cant wait until you finish that canopy...you will be putting some molding on the canopy to match the stand rite?

umm I get them from the wholesaler that sells to my cabinet shop in the bay. I dont know if they sell to the public but it was Charles McMurray and Co. They are probably 10 bucks for each hinge and a couple bucks for the hinge plate, and the big one on the top are similar to the hydros youll find in a screen door but they assist open instead of soft close kinda hard to mount though they have to be perfect or it could put stress fractures in your canopy, i think I paid 60 bucks each. Remember all my prices are wholesale, expect to pay a lot more.
