that gobie has got to go. I would heat some oil in a 10" saute pan, and net that sucker!

Here is the culprit on a low level bombing run. Check out the leather behind the clam...looks like it is snowing in South Dakota in August...

I just didn't have good luck with clams in my other tanks. I'm not sure if it was the lighting, or I had something picking on them, but they just didn't last very long. I can't explain why they seem to be doing well in this tank..maybe its the lighting, or more flow....

Jnarowe,

You are right!!!!! no heaters needed!!!

As a matter of fact the tank was in the den which was under ground. The room stayed at about 72-73 degrees and I had a hard time keeping the temp below 81-82 degrees

Got to think that you are right. The lobster in the 470 might have gotten them, but the light in the 210 probably wasn't enough and maybe the flow down low. I am saving room for the two big guys if you still have them and they go on sale...........

actually, IME you don't want too much flow on clams or they won't open up enough.

Nice clams, wish I had near the floor space for 14 of those puppies!

J, I think you're dead on about flow. I have a teardrop max up high on my rock work in a high flow area, and a deresa and squammy on the floor sheltered between some rocks. I have about 70x turnover and the max only opens during the MH light cycle, where as the two clams on the floor, where there is less flow, are open as soon as the AM actinics come on.

The deresa and squammy have nearly doubled in size in a year as well.

You might be right, the one that scooted about 3 1/2 feet in the tank was at the front and moved to the back, where I know there isn't much flow, but it now sits under a ledge where there isn't all that much light..go figure...

While taking pictures of the clams, I spotted the little white Anemone crab sitting up in the GBTA up high on the rocks.

grab it out and put it on a rock. Try to get it cradled in a crevace between rocks and see if it stays put. don't let it stay too long without enough light or it will croak.

Croceas: intense light
Derasas: Semi intense
Maximas: medium-low
Squamosas: semi-to low
Gigas: someone chime in

All clams need calcium and alkalinity to be spot on. Also, clams feed on nutrients, and plankton.

I agree, I think most clams starve to death from lack of food, or nutrients, or both

What are the best numbers for the calcium & alkalinity for the clams? Water tests done today had calcium @ 420 & alkalinity @ 10.6

clams actually like the salinity a bit "rich" too, at around 1.026. Your current numbers for Ca and alk are just fine for them.

Salinity today was 1.023, trying to slowly raise that up.

That will help I am sure. Really for a mixed reef, all the big tank owners I know keep them at 1.026. Of course that means you don't get quite as much water out of a bucket of salt, but that's the way it goes...ain't nothing a little money can't cure!

Do you guys use buckets or boxes of salt? I've been able to get my hands on boxes containing 4 bags of salt. Each makes 50 gallons of salt water. I've found it makes water changes real easy, as I dont have to measure the salt, just fill a 50 gallon drum and dump in a bag. Actually I just ordered 15 more boxes today. Cant wait to load them and unload them to and from my car.
