Would I get the carbon fiber tube from mjmods.com as well? If not, does anyone have a link to where I could get one?

Does anyone know what the outer diameter would be for the carbon fiber tube?

This is what I found when I did a search at towerhobbies.com

Alternatively you can use 3/16" rigid airline tubing instead. Can be picked up from the local LFS or PetSmart

I'd spend the extra money just to have a pump body around in case I needed it, but that's just me.

As for the carbon fiber tube, I got a 3/16" tube for the Octura 1435 (or Dumas 3004). It fits right into the magnet and prop.

No. You need rigid tubing.

Now I'm with ya. So here's the plan of action.

Go to Petco and pick up the rigid tubing.
Get a couple MJ 1200's from people around the community.
Order some props from mjmods.com. Which props do I order? I've seen the Octura 1440 mentioned quite a few times, but I only see an Octura 1435 on their website.

You would have a hard time getting some MJ1200's to spin an Octura 1440 without trimming it down a lot. Better to use a 1435 or if you want more flow the Dumas 3004 propeller.

Again towerhobbies to the rescue for that prop.

I picked up the tubing from PetSmart. How's it going to fit in?

For the props, you might be able to get them from a local hobby store. In my case, they had to order it because it wasn't in stock, but that only took a week. I ordered a couple of the Dumas 3004 and a couple of the Octura 1435 to try out. The Dumas I had to trim down a bit and it was too much for my tank, so now I'm just using the Octura.

The hobby store had everything I needed (except for the MJ of course).

I couldn't believe how easy it was. I forgot to take pictures, but it looks just like the one on the first page of this thread. For about $50 (not including the MJ since I already had it), I got a nice clean PH on a magnet mount that pushes >1200gph.

How did you trim the Dumas? Light sanding? Scissors?

Best way to trim is to run the pump with the magnet inside and without the shroud on. use your finger to keep the magnet centered and run the propeller against some sand paper. This will make sure your propeller blades are trimmed evenly and balanced.

Ok, I've got everything I need and I'm unable to figure out how to get the ends off the MJ Impeller to put the other prop on. Do I pull them off with force and then glue them back on?

Nevermind. Two sets of pliers did the trick.

I snipped the end of the impeller off and the prop won't turn. Was that wrong or do I have something setup incorrectly?

I modded one of the 4's today with a MJ1200 magnet and a 1435 prop. It feels like it is pushing a good bit more water than my unmodified 4's. It starts perfectly every time also.

Any idea how much more it would be pushing? Is this the most reliable combination?

It is also pulling 12 watts like the unmodified pump.

I just modded the koralia 4 with an octura 1240. I cut the prop off the koralia magnet and attached the 1240 righht to the stock koralia magnet. I had to trim it down quite a bit, but this thing rocks now. Its pushing a lot more water than before. I also put the stock prop from the koralia on my mj mod to see what that would do, it seems to push considerably more water with the maxijet magnet. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results of the swap out. This thread rocks!!!!! Thanks.

jacmyoung,

can you do a definitive estimate (like the oxymoron irony of that statement?) of the octura 1240 mod on the k4?

i finally took your vote of confidence and did the mod to my k4.

wow, youre right...it was pretty simple.

it 'feels' to my hand to be pushing A LOT more than 1600gph...almost TWICE as much water. mind you, i did not trim the prop as much as you did and the k4 struggles like a demon to try and start up...but once it does...whoowheee!
