Cool Chromis in pairs OK?

I read that Chromis should be kept in odd numbers.
I have had a pair of green Chromis for a month. One of them appeared to have a vertical white line about 1/4 of an inch wide, and a narrower one in front of its Anal fin. The fish was found dead on a rock 5 days later. Is it possible this was an injury inflicted by the other Chromis?

Not to hijack, but why the "odd number" rule? I've heard it as well, but never a reason to go along with it.

I've had two from original school of six for a year and a half now and they get along fine.
