Clorox bleach cleaning sump Filter Socks?

Will soaking the sump Filter Socks in bleach and then rinse it thoroughly with freshwater be safe to reuse?

Ive read that they are intended to be safely washed with bleach. As long as the bleach is straight bleach with no scents/colors etc.

you might want to add declorinator to the water that you rinse it in.. like wash the bleach off then soak in reg. water with some declorinator in it..ive done that and have had no problems with it

I soak my filter socks in bleach overnight. It gets all the dirt and detritus out of the fibers and turns the sock back to white and completely clean. I rinse mine very well then put them in a bucket with water and dechlorinator to make sure to get all the bleach off. I do the dechlorinating part twice just to make sure all the chlorine is neutralized before I put the filter socks back into my sump for use again.

From what i recall bleach when it dries dissapates(sp?). I know for my freshwater the micron filters for my magnum you need to use a bleach/water mixture and let them soak. Never had issues with the bleach soaked filters in my freshwater.

I rotate 5 sock filters. Throw 4 in the washing machine with Clorox & then rinse them in the dishwasher, rinse again in the sink with R/O & let them drip-dry.

Overkill? Yeah

I put my Carbon & Rowaphos bags in the sock so they tend to get pretty grungy.

How do they work in the dishwasher since they obviously get dishwashing soap on them? I know the bleach can be neutralized, but what about soaps?

Hey Pike, I can hear my wife now...first I used all her utensils for my tank...now the washing machine for my carbon socks. She will go ballistic...better do it when she goes to work, I like the idea!

i let it sit overnight una bucket with 25% bleach and 75% water. i rinse it with declorinated water and i leave it in another bucket(specially for this task) and i leave it there for 24 hour with declorinator. i always test the water before using the filter again

I toss mine in the washer with a little Clorox and use the "auto extra rinse" cycle. Comes out nice and clean. I let it dry before I use it. Any residual bleach will evaporate out.

I add regular Clorox to the natural seawater that I collect and have been doing it for many years. Just make sure it is "Regular" clorox and as was said air dry it or add chlorine remover.

I throw mine in the washer with 1/4 cup of bleach
run it though and let dry
no problems
I would run the washer though before doing this because of
soap left in the washer
most soaps have phosphates why add to problems

That's what we do at the Aquarium. All filter socks go in the washer with a cup of bleach, then in the dryer with no dryer sheet. Never had a problem.

If you stop and think about this: What exactly is bleach? before freaking out, it should make you sleep better at night.

Bleach is whatever 1.5% or 3% sodium hypochlorite which is an unstable molecule made of sodium, oxygen and chlorine. The rest is water. So, once the molecule gets done oxidizing something to attain a more stable state, it is essentially just more of what salt water is mostly made of.

Bleach is probably the most ideal oxidizer chemical there is regarding traces left over in tank equipment as it is 100% non-toxic.

I use 25% bleach and 75% water to clean my carbon media bags, to clean my magnum micron filter, to clean the nets and to regenerate my Purigen.
For the filter and bags I just rinse them well and let dry, for the Purigen I rinse and then add some dechlorinator (with no stress coat on it) to the second rinse.
I also use the bleach and water mix to clean my mixing tank after it has been cleaned with vinager to remove any carbonate deposits.

I don't use soap in the dishwasher btw. I've constructed a few plasic frames to keep the socks open end down & use clothespins to secure the ends to the top rack. They stay open throughout the cycle & get nicely rinsed from the inside-out.

I do the second "rinse" because the socks still have a faint bleach odor when I pull them out of the washing machine.

Ask me about the time mom came home from work to discover 2 VW engine case-halves in the dishwasher Hey! It worked!

More of the same here. Dirty filter socks. Use bleach. Nuff said.
