RO/DI help Typhoon 5 Stage valve position

I bought a Typhoon 5 stage RO/DI unit just the basic model. On top it has a horizontal canister which I assume is the membrane. There are two lines going in and two line coming out. There is one valve on the top of the unit. This is the only valve there is no fast flush or DI bypass. Should this valve be open or closed as it seems to work either way. When it is open it creates much more waste water than when it's closed. Any info would be appreciated as the directions aren't very clear.

thanks

The valve is not part of the top canister but is in-line on one of the tubes coming out of the top canister
