Aptasia and Baby Brittle Stars

Hi everyone...

2 Quick questions...

My 30g is infested with baby stripped Brittle Stars. There are literally hundreds of tiny little tentacles sticking out of my Live Rock. They are everywhere. I know that they are normally a good thing but I am afraid they are out of control. I have seen them on the glass and they are starfish with multiple tentacles and a center body. I even took out my Maxi Jet to clean it and had one on the table.

Also...

I have a minor Aptasia problem.

I have heard that Peppermint Shrimp will clear out my Aptasia.

The thing is is that I have 2 cleaner shrimp. Are they compatible?

Also... what should I do about the serpent brittle starfish?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Stidd

A large number of brittle starts indicates a lot of detritus in the tank. It seems this is a new tank, so the population should shrink over time.

Peppermint and cleaner shrimp are compatible. I've had little luck with peppermints eating aptaisia. I had better luck with an aptasia remover squirted onto the aptasia directly.

As lotus said, I wouldnt worry about the brittle stars..their population will be reduced over timke, but as to the pepermint shrimp eating aptasia....I had a huge outbreak after a new batch of LR was put in. I researched the pep shrimp thing and decided to go for it. It worked very well. Just make sure you get the right kind, there are two types (that I know of) of pepermint shrimp. The type that come from california dont eat them as well. Hope you have success

Thanks folks...

I'll be doing more frequent water changes and picking up a peppermint shrimp...

stay away from pepps from pacific ocean. Mine are so aggressive. they harrassed a tridacnid and killed it in 24 hours and killed a frag of acanthastrea. At first I didnt believe it. Now I can only got one out (the larger more aggressive of the two at least.) But they did eat the aptasia I had. If you do get them, feed them first before feeding corals/anemone otherwise they will take food out of the corals tentacles and even go sa far as to reach into mouths.
