Unhappy power outage!!!

well during a wonderful act of nature an ice storm knocked out power for the last 36 hrs. I just got home to find ice cold water and dead everything. Although my starfish, urchin, snails and crabs are moving really slow right now i think they might survive. but now i am going to start a rebuild and was wanting some ideas on livestock and coral. thanks for the help.

That's awful I'm sorry to hear it. This is sometimes a worry for me in my part of the world. We've had a few killer ice storms.

The "Reef Discussion" forum has a few threads going where people with larger tanks in your area are trying to keep things alive without power.

How cold is your tank?..... I wonder if the corals can be salavaged if you slowly bring your tank temperature back up. Surely somethign will survive.

You must have some power, if you're posting?

I take it that your electricity is back on. You are one of the lucky ones as I have talked to some people up that way who have heard that it will be 7 to 10 days before they get electricity back on.

Good luck on the rebuild, hopefully you can save some of the livestock. That really stinks.

my power was out for about 36 hrs. my tank dropped down to about 58 degrees. it is currently back up to around 65. my power has been back on for about 4 hrs. now hopefully by the time i go to bed it will be back up to normal or close to it. i do not have a heater are there any ideas on how to warm it up other than just let it naturally?

SLOW DOWN! It is vital that you bring the temp back up slowly. Rapid changes in temp will kill faster than the cold will.

You could heat water on your stove, put into ziploc bags and then float them in your tank.

This should raise the temp quite easily.

Ca>480ppm, I'm bringing it down
dKH=9, ok
PO4=0ppm, ideal

1/06/08 after a water change
Ca= 480ppm, still a little high
pH= 8.2, I'd like it at 8.3
NO3= 10ppm, acceptable

I'm sorry to hear about your tank. A ups battery system is intended for computers but works on anything that plugs into an outlet. They are similar to a giant powerstrip but they have a battery in them and when the power goes out they kick on. I have a apc battery system which is similar but a little cheaper. With everything plugged in it will only run for about 20 minutes after the power goes out, but if I unplugged stuff that wasn't of vital importance it will last longer. I've heard from people up in the north, that when the power goes out and it gets cold they wrap those hand warmer packs around the outside of the tank and cover it with some blankets. Hope everything works out for you and your able to save some of the remaining livestock.

im so sorry to hear, thats horrible. I fear that will happen to me some day, devastating. Like Rosseau said you could probably salvage some, but its unlikely :|

I really hope you get things back to normal.

Those hand warmer packs sound like they might work.

What I've kept on hand is a little butane camp stove with a small can of butane. Don't know if it'll work yet and I don't know how to test it out unless the tank gets cold.

good thing i am full of a lot of hot air......

that really sucks about your tank i hope some shall survive..

i was just yesturday looking at a UPS...but yeah the guy said it would only last maybe an hour with a koralia and a small heater...those 7 amp hour batteries like mentioned are meant fro laptops...and is enough to basically le you finish what your doing and save and power down properly...so

for your tank you are better of trying to build one...i am trying to figure out a way to do it with solar power...
