Please remember that not all pyramid snails are obligate clam feeders. The only way that you can get ones that prey on clams is to import them on a clam -- that is why you should always check new clams very very well and even scrub them with a toothbrush if you're really picky (like me).

hth,
John

How do you get rid of them. I lost two calms to them. Also how long should I wait to get a new clam.

i've found 2 different kinds of these snails in my tank over the years. nothing definitive, but the white one feeds on clams and the tan one feeds on snails. though you have to look really close with the naked eye to tell any difference.

and for a size reference- that's a penny along the top and the rocks are grains of fine black sand:

There is also a rissoid snail that looks almost identical to a pyramid snail. I had to send mine to Dr Ron Shimek for a positive ID.

That is what my rissoids do. I, too, thought maybe they were baby ceriths at first.

What about pyramid snails attached to the shells of astrea snails? Are they typically the kind that attack clams?

Not sure of the species name. Yes, they do damage to the snails.

Thanks for mentioning that. I thought I had found a pyramid snail this morning, but after looking up the differences between rissoids and pyramids I am fairly certain mine is a rissoid.

Here's a page that helps show the differences:

that can depend on what their food source is. they usually have a specific diet, either way they can / will devour that source. some eat clams, others snails etc, etc .....

i would guess that if you saw them, they are not going for your clams. if they were they would be around the foot / byssal opening or under a scute during day and up under the mantle feasting at night.

you best bet would be to try and post a pic
