UV Sterilizer - Stupid Question

I just setup my UV sterilizer. Since you can not see the bulb how do you know its working and how do you know when the buld needs to be replaced. For all I know I have water pumbing thru a broken sterilzer!! How do you tell without taking apart the unit and looking at the bulb (which the manufacturer says not to do!) Can someone answer my stupd question?

Whatever you do, don't open it up and look at the bulb. Someone did it a week or so ago and you can seriously damage your eyes and your skin.

I'm sure that you are supposed to replace them every X months, just not sure how long that is.

I would guess so. Did you buy it from a reputable LFS?

Here is the thread I was talking about:

I purchased it from Drs Foster and Smith... but.. that doesnt mean it didnt come defective from the manufacturer. There has to be a way to verify that its working... doesnt there????

Look at the water coming out of the output with a microscope and look for parasites?

which model is it?
the coralife has a pin hidden in the bulbs screw on cap you can push to be sure it's working, and also so you don't blind yourself when it's open....

BE CAREFUL with it, you can burn out your retinas in seconds from a high intensity UV blast.

look for the safety pin and push it with a piece of wood between it and your eyes, you will see the light from it on the floor. it takes it alot longer to affect your skin than it does your eyes.

if you dont have a peek window then the only other way to check if the bulb is lit while the UV running is:
if you have clear tubing on both in and out of the UV Sterilizer sometimes you can shut all the lights out in the room and see some kind of glow from the bulb comming from one of the tubings connected to the UV Sterilizer.
