Going to get some snails and crabs for my 72g FOWLR. Whats the best and how many should I get? Also want some shrimp. I have a sand substrate that seems to be collecting diatoms.

Here is what I have right now

hippo tang
clark clown
2 pajama cardinals
royal gramma
squirrel fish
few blue leg crabs
chocolate star
brittle star
emerald crab

Nassarius and Cerith snails are great snails to have. I stay away from crabs, mine only seemed to eat snails. Nassarius snails might be good for your sandbed, they only live in the sand and will pop out when you feed your tank.

The view on crabs is fairly split. Some people will tell you they will attack the snails. Others will say that if you have enough empty shells in the tank attacking the snails is not a problem.

As far as shrimp go some are more aggressive than other and most are territorial.

my sister had a Coral Banded Shrimp and it eventually ate the Skunk Cleaner.

Also her hermit crabs ate the snails

The thing with crabs is they are carnivores. They do serve a purpose though. They eat leftover stuff.....

I thought this was a pretty good simple post about snails:

Not too much reading, but gives the good points of each snail.

I recommend you get some crabs, but I would get 10-20 scarlet reef hermits instead of blue legs. I think you will be happy with them. I have ceriths, nassaruis and astreas snails and have never seen them bother snails in my tank for the year that I have had them. IME they are a great addition and add a lot of interest. I would put the blue legs in the sump if you want to keep snails. As far as shrimp go I would recommend a couple of peppermints for aiptasia control.
