Exclamation Ahhh!!! Holy Spontaneous Generation - Found An Unknown Fish in My Tank!!!

Ahh! I found this weird fish in my tank! It's about 4" long, and about 1cm wide at the head, getting progressively smaller to the tail, where it is pointed. The fish is clear, with brown sheen/line/ and organs showing. I have no fish that could have created this in my tank! I have a Purple tang, a leopard wrasse, 2 clownfish (no, this is NOT a clownfish!), a six-line ( just added).

I have no clue what this is. Anyone have any guesses??

Angela.

Ah yes the infamous magical fish. I see this same fish whenever I overdose on my Zyprexa medication as well.

Do you have a sea cucumber? If so, you may have a pearl fish that lives inside the sea cucumber. It makes its home in the cucumber's body. It enters and exits through the cuke's anus.

Gross, eh?

Thanks, Sherri, you solved the mystery

What an, um, odd, relationship!

Odd indeed, but really freaking cool that you got a cuke with a fish up its ***. Talk about an unexpected hitchhiker.

That's kind of disgusting, kind of fascinating. I'm torn.

What are you going to do;...keep the thing? FOUR inches????

I don't even dare ask what he eats.

Nope...not gonna go there.

I found this but no pic.

Does anyone have a pic?

Holothurians host a variety of symbiotic organisms: crabs, shrimps, worms and even a very unusual fish. The pearlfish (Encheliophis homei and mourlani / Onuxodon margaritiferae) has a long slender, transparent body and lives in the gut cavity of the sea cucumber (Boshida argus, Thelanota ananas, Stichopus chloronotus). They also inhabit some starfish as well as pearl oyster shells. The fish leaves and enters (tail first) through the holothurian's anus. They probably feed on the gonads and other tissues of its host. It is said to leave at night to feed on small fishes and shrimps.
Sea cucumbers are used in Asia as a base for soups.

I do NOT want Butt Fish soup!!!!!
But....if you're wondering what to have for dinner some night, Angela...well....there's always the Cuke.

http://www.starfish.ch/reef/echinoderms.html

There's the link. I should have posted it before.

I re-read the paragraph.

This thing feeds on the Gonads of the host.

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!!!!!!!

You could raise them...sell them...

Angelas new and rare gonad eating fish, ON SALE NOW!!!

Angela, you need to add Gonad Eating Butt Fish to the list of your tank inhabitants.

Maybe...The Pearl Fanny Fish?

Ok, I'll stop.

PS Your sig say's you have a mixed tank. Now THAT'S an uderstatement!

Does no one feel for the poor cucumber. And how did that fish acquire it's name? I've seen many more descriptive names in this thread already. Talk about a good hiding place.
NewReefLady, we need sequence shots of it entering and leaving. You can then start your own cuke-fish fetish porn site!

I'm sure Angela would really appreciate everyone using the phrase "Angela's gonad eating butt fish" as much as possible.

PS- How's school?

I searched for a picture, but didn't find anything appropriate for a public site. Maybe I shouldn't have searched on "Angela's gonad eating butt fish".

Anyway, I found this tidbit of information which further enhances the special qualities of this fish: "there is a tendency towards sexual pairing inside the host.":fun1:

You have to wonder what made the first butt fish think the rectum of a cucumber was an ideal spot to hide. You also have to wonder how the first cucumber to be the recipient of a butt fish felt about the situation.

Angela, I feel for you. It looks as if you are forever branded. I can just see it now, walking into my LFS and hearing, "Do you have any Angela's Butt Fish?"

Now here's a thought to make everyone sleep a little better---what if this fish, as with mud skippers or octopuses or eels, gets out of the tank and starts crawling around looking for a new home?

I think that sound you heard was the simultaneous clamping of hobbyist b--- cheeks.

Another thought, after the fish finishes with the cuke, is he a eunuch? Wow, talk about new forms of birth control! Those without kids and who may want some in the future may not want to own a cuke that could unleash a gonad eating fish.

Oh I gotta stop
