how to keep racoons from birdfeeder??

OK, any ideas? I have a small garden in the middle of the backyard with birdfeeder on a 6 foot pole and a birdbath about 5 feet away from it. The darn racoons keep dumping the seed on the ground. I put vaseline on the pole so it must have climbed on the bird bath and jumped from there as this morning I found the feeder on the ground with the hanger broken. These pests come out in the middle of the day as well as at night. Any hints on getting them to leave the feeder alone?

Thanks

There's a bird seed you can get with pepper in it that squirrels and racoons can stand. I get a bag and mix it in with my other seeds in a large garbage can and it really works. It doesn't effect the birds at all. GL, Marcye

if it's a metal pole, you can make a very effective baffle with stovepipe. we have them on all of our bluebird nestboxes. no way a raccoon or squirrel or cat can get past it.

had racoon problems when I was a kid like this.. put some tabasco around the pole at about head level.

For some reason they like to taste it. But they only taste it once...

You will hear a screech like you have never heard if it worked. I didn't think racoons made noise.. They do..

Did it once and they never came back.
