Suggestions Please

Hello all,

My wife has actually suggested that we put a small tank in my son's room. I'm looking to put anywhere from a 30g to 60g in there. I will use live rock, but I'm guessing it will mostly be fish in the tank. I'm looking for ideas on how to keep the tank as quiet as possible. I have not decided on whether to use a sump yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve:

The Remora is very quiet. Some complaints lately from others but I love mine on a 33. Also, if you need cooling, consider a 4" Icecap variable speed fan. Very quiet and only runs as fast as needed. Lastly, try to put ballasts in as remote a location as possible to avoid buzzing noises.

Oh, and avoid Pistol Shrimp.

My first tank was a 15 gallon fish only in my room. with an eclipse hood. I had many restless nights with that thing. If the water level dropped, it became extremely annoying.

What ever you do, keep it real simple, just normal output bulbs and a hang on filter that makes little noise.

Good luck.

I agree with S.H. but...
Hang on filters can be noisy if the water level drops. You may want to consider a small canister filter.

Oh, besides, since you are a TOTM winner now, you can't ask for advice anymore.

I have a 29gal. tank in my room. I guess I am a heavy sleeper because even when the water level drops it dosen't bother me.

All I have is a canaster filter and a red sea prizma skimmer.

lol I even have a moon light on that tank(which dosen't keep me up)

Are you against tying it into your main system, or just can't. If you go sump less just throw a seio in and maybe a hob fuge. Tom is just using the cpr bac pac's on some of his systems so that may be a decent skimmer to look at. The velocity pumps are supposed to be silent if you go with a sump or an eheim

I have a magnum 350 that is very quiet. I would Invest in one of those. Plus you can add the Bio-wheel to it and have extra biological filtration.

Thanks all. I'm not sure when I'll be putting it together. His birthday is in two months, but I probably will not have the time to get everything ready by then. I'll have to sell some frags to subsidize this project, at least I think that's what I agreed to with my wife.

Nope, not possible without putting in a very expensive pump. His room is on the second floor and the sump is in the basement (and on opposite sides of the house). I'd like to keep them separated anyhow. If one crashes I'll have some backup corals in the other.

My son had a 30 gallon with a powerhead and a BakPak skimmer, seemed quiet enough for him --until he lost interest in being a reefkeeper. Tank was remarkably stable with a little Bionic and water changes.

Assuming your son is an infant, doubt "tank noise" will really be an issue for him--may as well get used to it early!! Bet you could teach him to start a siphon right now!

Before upgrading to my 125g, I ran a 40g FOWLR sumpless, skimmerless for 2 years. Just a few clowns, powerheads, LR, sand and it was the quietest tank you never heard.

Steve,
I bet if you keep the coral and fish load down you can get away with a small h.o.t. unit and weekly water changes. Keep the flow high with a power head. Most of the noise in a reef system comes from skimming, water plumbed to and from a sump, and cooling fans.
Oceanic now make a 30 gal cube (not rr). Tom has one in his store now, with a hood and stand. Looks really clean.
