Cool, because for Christmas I specifically asked for the 2 Blue Plus's, UVL Aquasun, and UVL Super Actinic, and i was making sure I will still like my choice for my softy tank...

I am getting lost trying to read through this thread, searching for the answer of my question. All i want to know is how high up off of the water should my t5 bulbs be? And, who has the best variety of bulbs and retro kits?

Reefgeek.

Keep the lamps at least 5 inches above the water so you don't get salt spray on them.

I meant 4, don't know where the 5 came from. You will just have to keep the lamps and reflectors wipped down if they get spray on them.

Grim, what's considered "really bright"?

Grim, do you use an acrylic shield on your T5s?

Currently running 6x80w T5 on my 125g with the following bulbs:

3 ATI Blue Plus
1 GE Daylight 3000k
1 Giesmann Pure Actinic
1 ATI Aquablue Special.

I need to order new bulbs and want a 14k look. What bulbs should I get.

Like I said, not really up on the LED technology. The 1 watt one's may be the really bright ones for all I know.

I'd go with what you have listed except I would use an ATI actinic instead of the Giesemann. Their new one is a lot better.

Thanks for the quick response Grim.

The 2 8 bulb 48" Icecap retros you recommended for my tank (10 ft long by 30 inches deep) would those be the VHO retro kits or the HO retro kits?

I think I have seen which bulbs you recommend but how would you group them for the best dawn/dusk effect.

Thanks again,
Stilgore

VHO retros

Front
Blue Plus 3
Aquasun 4
Blue Plus D/D
Super Actinic D/D
Aquasun 4
Blue Plus D/D 2
Aquablue 3
Blue Plus D/D 2

If you wire the lamps side by side you can have each ballast run 2 rows. Doing it like I have it listed will let you do the lighting in 4 stages, dusk/dawn dusk/dawn 2, early/late day and midday

OK Grim I run 60" retro 8 bulbs on IceCaps. What bulb configuration would give me a Phoenix 14K look and what would give me a 20K Radium look? I saw a few posts ago for 6 bulb 14K setup BTW but I have 8. TIA.

Grim,

I had a few issues while cleaning my reflectors this past week as my 2 year old tried to help and we managed to brake a few bulbs. I have 8 54W bulb retrofit running on 2 (660 Ice Caps) with SLR reflectors. My current bulb combination WAS...

1. ATI Blue +
2. UV Super Actinic
3. UV Aqua Sun
4. ATI Aqua Blue
5. ATI Blue +
6. GE 6500K
7. UV Super Actinic
8. ATI Aqua Blue +

I lost a Super Actinic and the GE 6500K. I have to re-order the bulbs this week but I would like to experiment a little with the Pro Color bulb from ATI somewhere in the mix. My tank color before was quite white and it did not have much pop with the reds and pinks. Everything red and pink looked dull and more brown then anything. Also the greens didn't look as good as I have seen on here with other tank shots.

What would you recommend, my tank is slowly turning into a SPS dominant tank.

I'm thinking of the following.

1. ATI Blue +
2. UV Super Actinic
3. ATI Pro Color
4. ATI Aqua Blue
5. ATI Blue +
6. GE 6500K
7. UV Blue +
8. ATI Aqua Blue

Thanks in advance! I'm not limited to only changin out the 2 bulbs that broke. I'm open to anything.

Grim, I have another oddball question....

What will happen when you use electronic ballast for normal output T5's on T5HO bulbs?

Will it only underpower the bulbs, or will it cause problems?

If it will even light the lamps they will be underdriven.

What exactly does the UVL 75/25 bulb compare to? Fiji Purple, Procolor, something else?

Oh, and by the way, Geaux TIGERS!

I don't answer questions for LSPU fans

The 75/25 is weird. It has a slight red hue to it and will fluoresce things a little. Looking through the elcheapo spectrometer it looks like a Aquablue that has had a lot of yellow and green light removed. Sorta blue/violet and red/orange combo.

The MarineGlo is a pretty cool bulb IME. Kinda like a BluePlus with a little more white in it. I also have a PowerGlo and I really like it as a full spectrum bulb.

Hopefully someone with a Par Meter tests and posts on the Hagen Glo bulbs soon.
