Painting metal

I'm building a MH hanging arm out of 1/2 aluminum rods and want to paint them, but not sure as to how to make it look more pro. Do I paint a base coat, then a sealer or something?

For a top notch job, surface prep is key. Smooth out all surfaces with fine grit emery cloth / steel wool. Get a can of aircraft grade aluminum chromate primer as your sealer. Top that with a few thin layers of your chosen topcoat. A sealer after that would just be extra, IMO, not a necessity.

So basically I first use aircraft grade aluminum chromate primer, then a black paint as a topcoat? Still a little confused

Can try this too. For a home project of a small size it does work.

Go to an autobody paint/supply store and ask for self-etching primer in spray can. Use that as your primer and top coat with whatever you want.

Right-o Bruce. It's the self-etching that is key to the aluminum.
Available on-line for about 5-6 bucks a can.

If you have an Autozone near you, they carry the self-etching primer.
