Crab I.D.

I was re-aquascaping my tank and while moving a rock a crab crawled onto my hand(scared the crap out of me). It was a pale yellow, fuzzy, compact and the size of a quarter. Looked like a moving sponge. I am assuming he is not reef safe since he appeared after I moved the rock where my GSP were....my GSP over the past 2-3 weeks has gained quite the swiss cheese likeness. Sorry no pic. He disapeared quickly. Thanks in advance.

Did it have red eyes? Difficult to ID without a visual! Seems like the fuzzy ones are always bad news, though.

I have one of those, He's nearly 3" across his shell.
This is him...

I've never had any problems with him.
I have read that if threatened they will pull anemones off rocks to use as defense.
I have never seen him anywhere near any of my anemones though.
Pretty good for cleaning up the tank too.
I had a fish die and get blown in behind my rock work. I was worried about it being too big for my hermits to eat before it started to mess the water up, but when I looked the next morning the 3" crab had dragged a 5" rock cod out from the rocks two feet across the tank to his hole where I got it off him. (After a bit of a tug of war!)

Rich...

A "teddy bear" crab like this one killed my algae blenny and my flameback angel.
